May 19, 2004, WE JUST DON'T LIKE ISLAMIC WEDDINGS, DAMN IT!
Recalling those halcyon days when we would willy nilly drop bombs from 6 miles up on Afghan wedding parties, we decided to import that tactic to Iraq, killing forty to fifty civilians, including children. Since we had a justification to be fighting in Afghanistan, and did so with a rather meager deployment, I would have described such events there as "tragic", or "unfortunate". But since we have no business whatsoever being in Iraq, I would classify an event like this as "another war crime". Not that we don't seem to be committing them in the name of (what the fuck is this in the name of, again?) well, we just commit them, more or less every day.
The good news is that nice Specialist Jeremy Sivits decided to be the first fall guy, pleading guilty in exchange for leniency and willingness to rat on his friends, and begging not to be discharged from the service, only to have military prosecutors double-cross him and have him sentenced to a year in prison followed by dishonorable discharge. Needless to say, his sentence carries an automatic appeal to the Court of Military Appeals, and I daresay, may not stand up. The others accused so far have pleaded not guilty, and while their "we were only following orders" defense sounds Nurembergesque-- the fact is, for the most part, I'm not sure their orders were illegal on their face (as opposed to "let's mow down this village", for example). As such, I'm not so sure that's a bad defense: there were standing orders, literally from the President, to torture people. Why should THESE people go to jail for accepting the same crappy and bogus rationale that even some of our federal appeal courts have bought (i.e., the President has authority to do what he wants with illegal combatants).
The President is the guy who should be standing trial and facing incarceration (please God some day he will). A low level flunky like Jeremy Sivits simply had no reason to know the order was illegal. Distasteful and disgusting-- sure. But "illegal"? I'm just not sure that a soldier ordered to use rough techniques to interrogate a prisoner-- while directly ordered to do so by an officer STANDING RIGHT THERE-- is himself criminally culpable. The officer, his commander(s), the Undersecretary or Secretary of Defense, the Vice-President or President, of course, ARE guilty, clearly. No matter. Sivits took the plea, so we will blame the entire war on him, and tell the world "you see, we mean business, America stands for justice, yada yada yada...".
Well, it won't fly: we have committed yet another atrocity. I can only hope that those actually responsible face justice. We know who the evildoers are, and in this case, we know precisely WHERE they are. I understand that most of them meet in the White House every morning at 7 a.m., promptly (dry drunks tend to be timeliness freaks, you know).

I am waiting to see just how high up the Abu Ghraib dominoes will fall--to massacre a metaphor. Watching this administration string up a handful of grunts and NCOs is as sickening as England's proclamations that they took pictures because it was all so funny.
As far as the wedding bombing goes--my theory: it was a gay wedding, and it had to be stopped.
