July 30, 2008, A Poem on the Underground Wall
Thomas Nephew writes in to note that we are up against something that is no laughing matter. Attorney General Michael "Good Fascist Soldier" Mukasey is quite literally asking Congress to declare a permanent war and an all time amnesty on Bush Administration law breaking. This is not out of the pages of The Onion.
It seems clear that just as Mukasey was serious in refusing to pronounce waterboarding as torture (hey, maybe Torquemada was just using "enhanced interrogation" on those heretics... you can't call it "torture," right?)... there is no reason not to believe he is deadly serious on this.
The ACLU is organizing a call to action on this one: I answered the call, and I urge you all to do the same, quite literally, while we still have the freedom to do something about it, lest an ever more feckless Congress yield our precious liberty for the illusion of a little more temporary security.

Wow, thanks, TD. Didn't figure on you doing a blog post about this -- now I think I'll write one too. Two makes a blogswarm! These guys are like addicts -- there's never, ever enough of the crack they need. It's also kind of sad Mukasey has revealed himself as such a tool. I'd known of him prior to the AG stint as an apparently fairly reasonable judge in a case of local interest (woman who half stumbled, half was pushed into a "foreign agent=IRAQI SPY!!!!" charge). But that was (a) just one case and (b) not that sterling a case either; she spent a long time in a facility that +/- specialized in psychological evaluation, when that was really a stretch, in my opinon. (Google "Lindauer".)
On another note: go ACLU! Not since the glory days of Bill Walton and Keith Wilkes has the team been this impressive, this dominant...

There will always be a discrepancy between security, liberty and the will of some people who have power to control everything.
