I’ve just about lost my appetite for any discussion of Israel, anyway, but these remarks are pretty disgusting.
I could not agree more completely that there are only two morally acceptable choices for Israel–full civil rights for non-Jews, or establish (and even support) a Palestinian state. And I would have though this completely inarguable until I saw the President of the U.S. manage to convince a major portion of our body public that a)waging an unprovoked war was somehow morally justified, b) torturing prisoners in violation of the Geneva Conventions was somehow morally justified, c) detaining prisoners indefinitely without charges, lawyers or trials was somehow morally justified, d) giving tax cuts to wealthy people while cutting funds for public housing, education and food for poor people was somehow morally justified, e) cutting off funds for UN AIDS treatment programs while claiming to be establishing (but not funding) massive new alternative programs was somehow morally justified, f) decimating our clean air regulations in the face of reliable studies indicating that huge increases in childhood asthma would result was somehow morally justified. And doing all this while managing to convince vast numbers of committed Christians that he is the President who has been anointed by God to do His will. So, since it is apparently now ok with God to trample the weak, shoot down the innocent, starve the poor, and revel in luxury while the homeless freeze in the streets, what can one possibly say about the prospects for Israel?
It seems that Sharon’s biggest mistake may have been that he was just insufficiently brazen. He really should not have stopped at bulldozing people’s homes and strafing streets filled with children and shopkeepers–it would apparently be easy to convince most of both the Israeli and U.S. citizenry (and Just Wondering) that God has asked for complete and total, out-and-out genocide. Just total obliteration of the Palestinian people. The Israelis apparently will not be satisfied until they have this blood and this shame and this horror on their hands, so let’s just get it the hell over with. It would be more humane than allowing the torture to continue. And I don’t think the charade of the roadmap or plans to withdraw from Gaza are even necessary anymmore–nobody believes it, nobody expects it to happen, and God probably doesn’t care, so why pretend?
