Two stories worthy of juxtaposition: this tale of the brave Iranians protesting against their theocratic tyranny as Iranian students take to the streets in protest, and this tale of Iraqi women now being forced to wear veils by religious extremists who have filled the power vacuum left by the United States military in the wake of our stated "regime change".

Is it worth commenting further? Has that ever stopped me?

Talk about the law of unintended consequences! We have, in the course of trying to isolate it, pretty much ignored Iran for nearly a quarter century. Almost as a result, its people (a huge proportion of whom have been born, or certainly grew up, after the Islamic Revolution), actually LIKE US-- they like the United States. They crave freedom, and are frustrated by the "reformers" inability to break through the theocratic logjam set up by the tyranny of the mullahs. Now they are taking to the streets. Well, Allah be praised, may they succeed in their quest. The Islamist extremists in their country are a threat to everyone, but mostly, to the freedom-seeking Iranian people.

Meanwhile, across the Western frontier in Iraq, Iranian-backed Islamist extremists are the best organized game in town. And, despite having committed tens of billions to the war effort (not to mention American credibility, oh, and some lives-- did I mention that this wing ding got people killed?), not only does the Iraqi joy at our presence seem, well, less than enthusiastic, but besides a Mad Max anarchic state in large parts of Iraq, the only order in Iraq is often provided by... Islamist extremists! You know-- the kind of people against whom we are allegedly fighting the War on Terror TM.

Proconsul Bremer may be doing a better job than previous proconsul Garner, but its not happening fast enough. Chalabi is standing by to be handed interim rule (doubtless so HE can get his Swiss bank accounts up to speed), and we may have a friendly looking Iraqi government, but as in Afghanistan, it appears that we are really good at blowing things up, but at a grand strategic level, at least this Administration is as good its record. With the exception of tax cuts for the super-rich and removing Saddam, the Bush Administration has yet to keep its promise on anything. Don't be looking for this perfect record to be broken by providing theresources necessary to properly rebuild Iraq.

Here's hoping we have the good sense to leave Iranian regime change to the Iranians, and not impose our American largesse there.
