The President and British PM Tony Blair appeared before a joint session of Congress to justify their actions in misleading both of their respective nations into an ill-advised war against Saddam's Iraq, albeit a nasty regime, but one that posed no threat to either nation.

Specifically, PM Blair did all of the talking (at least the part that didn't involve stutters and blank stares and the use of the words "darned good"), and he stated that even if the "evidence" of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction proves to be completely false, the world would still forgive any decision to remove the aforementioned nasty regime. He went on to say that the world would not forgive the failure to continue waging the War on Terror TM. (I didn't get a harumph out of you!)

I have to hand it to Tony-- he is articulate, and intelligent sounding. (No person of good will, BTW, should ever forgive him for lending the spectre of legitimacy to Dubya's politically minded war of aggression, however.) I suspect that Tony is running a bit scared now. Some polls I read showed that he is unpopular among his own constituents for ramming the Iraq thing down their throats, and that the Conservative Party may be in a position to take advantage of this; at least their support of the Iraq war is perceived as sincere and consistent with the rest of its agenda, I suppose. (Dubya relies on Karl to do that kind of thinking for him, and Karl is under strict instructions not to give him bad news, so we can only guess what's going on there...)

Still, the uraniumgate thing has failed to go away, unlike many of the more irritating other annoyances Bush has faced. And if this story I posted yesterday of the deliberate betrayal of our own intelligence agents (L'Etat Est Bush) by the White House proves to be true, its gonna be a long, hot summer for Bush's handlers. They may have to consider interrupting his 14-hours a day of sleep, or even his 5-K time trials.

In short, like a shlocky horror movie, this could all get scary...

Actually, Blair doesn’t seem to expect forgiveness from the world for the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation that he recently participated in. No, he expects forgiveness from history itself:

Can we be sure that terrorism and weapons of mass destruction will join together? Let us say one thing: If we are wrong, we will have destroyed a threat that at its least is responsible for inhuman carnage and suffering. That is something I am confident history will forgive.

But if our critics are wrong, if we are right, as I believe with every fiber of instinct and conviction I have that we are, and we do not act, then we will have hesitated in the face of this menace when we should have given leadership. That is something history will not forgive.

Of course if he ends up the winner, he gets to write it…

And you are right to note that in the second paragraph, Blair transitioned from the first paragraph’s excuse for the invasion of Iraq to predicting some sort of second act that he expects to take place. That is, he’s talking about the future here. Since no-one is flinching from a “war on terrorism” per se, I wonder what he has in mind.

Well, Blair might well look to history; given the lack of any such forgiveness that will be forthcoming from his own electorate if he is exposed as wrong over WMD. Still the 'dodgy dossier' is doing enough damage with the Blairites bogged down in a pointless and unwinnable propaganda war with the BBC and accusations of hyping up intelligence claims. The recent demise of one of the sources for the story, within the Ministry of Defence, has only complicated matters even more.

Still if Blair can get a quid pro quo, as in for example, cutting a deal for Brit citizens stranded in Camp X-Ray; he can salvage some credibility by showing that going along with Bush has some benefits.
