July 24, 2003, Tough day for politicos named Davis
New York still deals with the aftermath of the extremely bizarre murder of City Councilman James E. Davis by a poltical rival in the City Council chamber. Nut jobs and homicides-- what are you gonna do? In this case, a clear breach of security occurred. City employees can show i.d. and bypass the City Hall metal detectors; apparently, so can "guests of VIPs", which is how the assailant, Othniel Askew, entered the allegedly secure City Hall building.
Maybe our whole "security is just for the purpose of inconveniencing the peons" thing should be reconsidered, as the mayor on down should subject themselves to the metal detector from here on in. City Hall, you will recall, is just a short distance from Ground Zero-- evidence of the ultimate breach of security. While making octagenarian ladies take off their shoes at the Peoria Airport is probably absurd-- New York's City Hall (and other key public buildings) should certainly have anticipated something like this.
Councilman Davis, 41, was an ex-policeman and founder of an anti-urban violence organization, he was an ordained minister. We send our condolences to his loved ones.
In other Davis political news, California's Gray Davis becomes the first governor in that state's history to face a recall election. Among the likely challengers are Congressman (and recall instigator and financier) Darrell Issa (a rich guy thanks to the car alarm business-- the bane of many an urbanite trying to get some sleep-- if that isn't enough to hate him, I don't know what is), ex-LA Mayor Riordan, ex-gubernatorial candidate Simon, and of course, ex- Mr. Universe Arnold "Conan the Republican" Schwarzenegger. Two questions on the ballot: (1) Do we recall Davis-- yes or no and (2) If yes, who gets to be governor. Plurality wins; if there are enough candidates, the preference of a tiny percentage of voters could select the governor (query whether Gray Davis could be one of the choices?)
I suppose Davis could resign now in favor of his Democratic Lieutenant Governor (I believe that Democrats hold all major state offices in Sacremento now); I'm not sure if that ends the recall situation. Ah, the fun of it! We in stodgy New York have no such recall system. Anyway-- Gray Davis is a cantankerous prick, so he won't resign. In the last election, the Republicans found the one man in the state who could not beat Davis (Bill Simon) and ran him (and lost). Now, a simple majority vote against Davis, and he's done. He's vowed to fight like a "Bengal Tiger"; odd choice, as that team plays in Cincinatti. How about a "Shark", or a "Sleeping Giant", or an "Artful Dodger", or a "Golden State Warrior"-- some local color to preserve the Sacramento King. If only he had waged such a fight against the absurd energy regulation system that led to California's energy crisis. But oh well. Water over the hydro-dam, as they say!
Also look for the interesting national implications. The official GOP party leadership is stayng out of this. If California does recall Davis in favor, of say, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the GOP in the Golden State may be perceived as little more than comic relief for a long time to come, in which case the GOP can write off its electoral vote mother lode, not to mention control of the nation's largest state government, for the foreseeable future.
Time will tell, but the entertainment capital of the world promises to entertain the rest of us for the next 60-80 days with this.

As a recent immigrant, I find the violence in this country, that is, the killing of James Davis in a democratic forum, as well as the political unrest, that is, the California proposed recall vote, most unsettling.
