July 26, 2003, Did we get Qusay and Uday-- Da or Nyet?
Today's Saturday look at what our friends from Pravda have wrought takes us to this interesting analysis regarding the location, and then gunning down, of Qusay and Uday (and some others, including evidently Saddam's 14 year old grandson, who, if some elements of the story are to be believed, seems to have held off American forces in a gun battle largely by himself for several hours, until he too was killed).
Forgetting the easy questions of whether or not the published photographs reveal that we actually got our men (or as speculated, corpses were conveniently selected to fit the bill), and forgetting the other obvious questions of why our forces would not have bent over double backwards to try to take at least one of these motherfuckers alive so that they could be tortured... that is, "interrogated" to revealing the location of Saddam himself and those all important WMDs (assuming we want to persist in the charade that they actually exist(ed)), Pravda raises a key question: what the fuck were these boys doing in Mosul?
Mosul is a Kurdish city-- albeit one under Saddam's control until we liberated it in April-- but the Hussein boys would hardly have been popular there. Indeed, if one wanted to find a place where the locals might be just de-lighted to rat them out just for fun, one might suggest either a Shiite or Kurdish area. Its a very important question-- and I haven't seen anyone else asking or answering it. There are so many questions as it is associated with this war as it is-- but this one seems rather obvious, coming as it does at a rather opportune "Wag the Dog" moment (as did the more and more controversial rescue of Pfc. Jessica Lynch before it) as the President still can't shake the uraniumgate issues, an embarassing Congressional 9-11 report has come out, and concerns about "outing" possible CIA operative Valerie Plame to discredit her husband Ambassador Joe Wilson all simultaneously continue to percolate.
Let me just say that I hope American forces actually did get Q and U-- if for no other reason, so that Iraqis need no longer live in fear of the Tikriti dynasty beyond the aging Saddam himself (even if supposedly 80% of Iraqis believe the photos are fake). Please, let's not have fucked this one up too...
