Lost amidst the hoopla of Arnold Schwarzenegger's announcement that he will run for California Governor in the bizarre recall election, Gray Davis' fortress of solitude seems to be crumbling as major Democrats, notably Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, are starting to break with him and announce they will run on the recall ballot. I understand that Davis himself may even file as one of the candidates on the recall line, as if enough opponents of the recall vote "no" on that, but name him, he still might win a plurality even if knocked out as governor on the first line. I'd have to say the skies just got a little more grey for Gray...

Indeed, I have heard it suggested that given the $3,500 filing fee, if just 2,000,000 Californians decided to run for governor, this could plug the nearly $8 billion hole in the state budget! Why didn't they think of this earlier?

Well, Davis is an awful governor, and I understand he is a jerk-- but he was democratically elected for a four year term. Yes, California law allows this recall, and presumably, even if more signatures were required, Congressman Issa would have bought them, and the recall would go on (Davis is just that unpopular). But this is a nasty trend among "win at any cost Republicans". There is an unwritten rule of "see you next time" which requires some level of fair play. But we see in California, or in Texas where Tom de Lay won't take no for an answer on gerrymandering designed to manufacture 5 or 6 more GOP House seats, that the GOP these days just wants to win-- it doesn't care if it undermines democratic processes and institutions and traditions in the process. Slowly, we see things eroded... We have seen that the "checks and balances" quickly fall apart when one party (when that party happens to be the current G.O.P.) abuses the system.

Just as I have lamented the more-rapid-than-you-would-believe erosion of liberty, now I am lamenting the erosion of democracy, via self-dealing, win-at-any-cost tactics. We are a resilient system that has survived threats before, but why go this road? We built the best nation in the history of the universe with certain key cornerstone traditions of freedom and democracy. Why fuck with those?

Obviously, playing nice will not be how we remove the current problem child from the White House-- which really is the only way to reverse this unwelcome trend. But that's just how I see it...
