I had refrained from commenting on the terror attack via truck bomb at the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad, , as I was hoping that some explanation of it would emerge. But so far, nothing by way of explanation, for a blast that has injured at least 50 and killed 11 (all Iraqis).

By historical standards, of course, the American occupation of Iraq is not going badly-- no mass famine, epidemics, or an affirmative civil war, and the puppet government we have set up appears to be "representative". Some day, we may even get the oil flowing out of the ground. Of course, by historical standards, the United States has never engaged in a "pre-emptive" war of aggression before, so its not unfair to hold us to just a tad higher standard than usual on this one (especially when the "humanitarian" cover is dusted off).

Sadly, American troops continue to be targets of opportunity for a variety of different groups: Baathist loyalist gang bangers eager to establish their street credentials, Islamist nuts trying to drive out the infidels, or pissed off tribesmen itching for revenge against the invaders. (Two things that those attacking American troops tend not to be: Saddam loyalists trying for a restoration, or Al Qaeda members). Clearly, anything American in Iraq is, alas, a target.

But why the Jordanian embassy? Anger over asylum for two of Saddam's daughters? That seems nuts, does it not? But then, nuts is probably the state of the place. Its a tough neighborhood we bought ourselves. Maybe some explanation will emerge for this, maybe not. American military deaths post "mission accomplished" now well exceed those incurred during "major combat operations", and appear to be ongoing.

Even Halliburton employees are getting killed now. It seems obvious that this was not well planned, and because we are underdeployed, the place is undersecured, which will just extend the occupation and result in even more American casualties. But then, the President has probably left standing orders not to be told any bad news...
