August 17, 2003, Is this all part of the master plan?
First, let's welcome a blog called Chief Wiggles , from the perspective of a service-man stationed in-country (over in I-rack). Meanwhile, things over there sound awful from here, as we get to have our own massive power failure, we also get to hear of major explosions at oil pipelines and water mains in Iraq. What amazes me, of course, is that oil is supposedly the one thing we DO actually care about enough to try to secure. Or do we? It is obviously in the interest of some that Iraqi oil remain off-line as long as possible. Any (Saudi) guesses (Arabia) as to who that might be?
The big picture is that we have let down two groups: the men and women in uniform (such as Chief Wiggles), and of course, the Iraqi people, to whom we owe better, having put them in this situation in the first place. Yes, they suffered under Saddam, but that was all incidental to our involvement-- as George W. Bush couldn't give a shit about suffering in the United States (or in its military), I assure you, he could not care less about the suffering of the people of Iraq (before or after Saddam).
But rules are rules-- and we broke it, we bought it. After the inconceivable arrogance shown in plunging ourself INTO Iraq in the first place, when, as noted a coupla posts ago, we were nowhere near done with stabilizing Afghanistan (which actually DID harbor terrorists who masterminded plots against the United States) when we plunged into this one, we're just shocked-- shocked I say-- to learn that our European friends (and the UN, of course) won't be bailing our ass out of this one.
So, I guess we'll just get used to hearing about bad shit in Iraq for quite a while to come, just as we in New York City are, in the post 9-11 world, somewhat more mellow about how we take bad shit here. We're quickly learning to expect the unexpected.

Europeans bailing our asses out?
What planet do you live on. Europe has almost no military power, which is why they had to have us bail their asses out in the Balkans.
And if you read the blogs of other soldiers over their, you will find that they don't share your opinion of the war. Chief Wiggles is a good man, but he is also a patriot who recognizes danger when he sees it - unlike so many on the left.
Read his stuff. See how humane and considerate our soldiers are. And then remember that the next timeyour leftist friends are bashing them.

Um, John... whose bashing Chief Wiggles? Whose bashing any other American soldier (of the kind who kept their commitments, unlike, say... THEIR (not mine, I get to be a civilian in a free country, for now) commander in chief... ? They are doing a thankless, impossible job, and they have the gratitude of the nation. I don't know who the mysterious "leftists" are of whom you speak... I'll take your word for it as to "then" (though I have my doubts), but certainly as to now...
As to the Europeans, I was under the impression that "major combat operations" were over. The Europeans are a tad more experienced in managing "peacekeeping" than we are-- we could actually use that particular skill right about now, and yes, it would
constitue "bailing our asses out" on this one.
Our army is not structured for the kind of peacekeeping mission we have just dumped on our soldeirs-- its just not.
But go ahead and cheerlead the bastards who put them there-- be my guest.

First, what would you do differently in Afghanistan? Commit lots more ground troops as we have in Iraq (and as the Soviets did before us)? What proof do you have that more "boots on the ground" would stabilize Afghanistan better? Indeed, that it would stabilize Afghanistan at all?
Second, exactly where is it that the Europeans have demonstrated this prowess in peacekeeping that's so infinitely superior to what we have, or will, do?
To expand upon what John Moore says above, I think the problem that you and other left-leaning commentators have is that while you mouth support for the troops, you actually couldn't care less about them and would prefer that they get blown up to prove your point about Bush being a jackass.
Unlike some, I think you can support the troops and be against the war. But I think anyone who reads your blog regularly would realize that in your case (as in so many others), that's really not true.
