An Australian intelligence analyst is accusing the government of Prime Minister John Howard of exaggerating the threat posed by Iraq prior to committing 2,000 Australian troops to the coalition that participated in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The accusations parallel those brought against British PM Tony Blair for his commitment of British troops to the Iraqi adventure.
As you will recall, David Kelley, a key British figure purportedly associated with contentions that the British government "sexed up" the degree of threat posed by Iraq, was found dead of an apparent suicide under very questionable circumstancesa few weeks ago. The White House merely chose (apparently) to out CIA undercover operative Valerie Plame in payback to her husband for his disclosures that the Iraqi threat was overstated.
We will watch this whole thing carefully. Somebody out there seems to be playing very rough, lest the full story make its way out. The good news (if there is any) is that not one, not two, but three democratic countries are engaged in attempting to evaluate the performance of their governments with respect to their decisions to participate in the Iraqi campaign. I get the feeling that if there was malfeasance on the part of one or more of these governments, we will (at least eventually) learn of it.
The truth is out there.
