This week's visit to Pravda gives us this analysis of United States efforts to lure, or at least buy, the cooperation of other nations in the Iraq occupation and stabilization. The basic issues remain the same-- the big contract peacekeepers out there, India and Pakistan, don't really want to get their own folks killed in Iraq. Also-- there is the issue of how to pay them, the current idea being to award those nations sweetheart oil concessions in payment for their efforts.

Fundamentally, other countries who might otherwise participate in the effort do not want their troops to be under American command. Naturally, the control-freaks in chief do not want anyone else to participate unless they are under U.S. command. Result: the current go-it-alone position. Pravda is kind enough to list current force levels: USA - 140,000 servicemen, Great Britain - about 11,000 soldiers, other countries - about 12,000 soldiers and the Iraqi police - 32,000 people. While not exactly a pure going it alone, we do represent well over 80% of the occupying force. So, we will, unfortunately, take a rather high percentage of the inevitable casualties.

All worth it, of course. Because "he tried to kill my Dad".

No doubt the Pentagon also doesn't want it's troops operating under foreign command, and who can blame them? It would also pose incredible problems to have, in close proximity, multiple armies operating under the orders of their own command structure. Hell with that.

I would like to see the policing performed by someone other than US troops too, but not so soon that it threatens the success of the new government. When will that be? Fair question, but I think it's still too soon to expect it already to be up and running.
