After a series of car bombings in Baghdad that left up to 30 people dead, including blasts at police stations and the local Red Cross affiliate, and indeed, evacuation of American headquarters at the Al Rashid Hotel (after losing a colonel and nearly losing Deputy Defense Secretary Wolfowitz) I find the President's response to the effect that these attacks are "reactions to the American success on the ground" to be describable only as bizarre. It seems to me that these attacks are evidence of failure on the ground-- failure to secure hostile occupied territory, because (more liberal apostasy), we haven't committed enough men and materiel. We need to radically increase our deployment, or we can watch this sort of homicidal insanity go on for years.

I'll just say it this way-- and any Democratic candidate who wants a winning electoral issue (though, sadly, not a winning primary position, which just shows the intrinsic deficiency of character in the party faithful, that all they care about are that their parochial interests are met, rather than fielding a candidate who will fucking win the election) is free to adopt this (or vote "talking dog/Moomaw" in the New Hampshire primary): (1) The Iraq war was wrong; I opposed it, I protested it, and I would have voted against Bush's resolution... but... (2) Bush having now opened that Pandora's box does not allow us any longer to debate the wisdom of the war. If we do not "win the peace", we will undermine American security and national interests by allowing a power vacuum and possible civil war in Iraq, as well as creating an almost certain haven for Al Qaeda and Iranian backed terrorist elements. As such, what matters is what it will NOW take to "win the peace"... PERIOD. The debates now going on between who voted for the war resolution and then who voted for the $87 Billion make me sick: pandering to "the base" that merely debases the debate. (And again, we can't "pull the troops out" without inviting the same civil war right now).

Delaware's Joe Biden-- not running for President-- has it right: tie the $87 billion to a tax-cut rollback to pay for it. If the President refuses to have his country club buddies pay for the $87 billion, then no $87 billion, period. Its not about "supporting our troops", or "blank checks", or loans-- its simple fiscal sustainability. In fact, to me, that should have been the basis of a fillibuster: you can have your $87 billion, or if necessary, $187 billion, but it has to be paid for. Biden would have had it paid for simply by reverting to the not particularly burdensome Clinton tax rates. That seems more than an appropriate "sacrifice" for national security, if you ask me. And it allows Democrats to vote against the $87 billion with complete impugnity if the President doesn't back down on not paying for it.

I don't know. Contrary to the reality-challenged President (George of the Bungle?), things in Iraq seem to be going horribly-- we have, as I once feared, bought our own private West Bank and Gaza. And the situation can be turned in our favor. But not when fundamental dishonesty reigns at the top. And if all the Democratic candidates can do is quibble among themselves about their own variation of dishonesty-- then that fundamental Bush dishonesty will get at least another 4 years.

I'm in Iraq for the foreseeable future and I'd much rather see the locals out working to rebuild their country instead of working to blow us up, (though I thought Republicans didn't believe in linkage between unemployment/despair and crime, but oh well,) on the other hand war requires sacrifices and maybe it's time our boss' friends made some too. I have no idea how good or bad this this will turn out, maybe the neocon fantasy will come true and Iraq will become a paradigm of liberal democratic virtue, or maybe despite our best efforts it'll turn into the world's biggest terrorist shithole. Who the hell knows. But you're right that we have to try. Remember the phrase "We're all Keynsians now?" Well it looks like we all have no choice but to try being neocons...
