Just who is behind the seeming endless series of bombings and explosions that continue to rock Baghdad, including explosions near the American provisional command headquarters in a former Saddam Hussein presidential palace? Could it be... reconstituted Baathists loyal to Saddam Hussein? Sure would pour water on that "victory" the President and his cheerleaders took credit for lo six months ago, wouldn't it?

Well, Saddam himself (unlike... the Americans) was always incredibly concerned with an exit strategy for himself-- how he would come out alive, if not necessarily on top-- in just about any scenario. But the American approach to Iraq last spring more or less gave him no open exit-- forcing him underground, which is where he still seems to be. It seems clear that Saddam feigned having WMDs as a bluff to increase his regional standing (and perhaps deter potential invaders, until such time as the apeparance of WMDs seems to have caused an invasion). Of course, it might be Al Qaeda operatives working in Iraq. Or Shiite terrorists backed by Iran. Or other terrorists backed by Syria or Saudi Arabia. Or a combination.

So... perhaps someone really snarky might ask... where's Saddam? Or, perhaps... where's Osama? Or maybe even, where's Mullah Omar? No one said the War on Terror would be easy, of course. But the occupation continues to be fraught with problems-- for occupied and occupier alike.

Its tough-- much as I'd love to see the President unceremoniously voted out of office a year from today, if its at the price of thousands of dead and wounded American soldiers and more still dead and wounded Iraqis, that price seems too high.

The problem is, the longer the occupation drifts on at this constant rate of carnage, the harder it will be to justify its costs to the American people, who polls show, are already starting to grow tired of it. And with Saddam still in play, the danger is that if we DO pull out of Iraq before stability is achieved, Saddam and the Baathists will be in pretty good position to seize power again, and compared to Al Qaeda or other terrorists, may actually be the best option.

Well, here's hoping that one or more Democratic candidates do a better job with this issue than I'm doing, and that Congressional Democrats do better than simply trying to obstruct the President. Bush showed balls in doing this (insane, illegal, and ill-advised) military adventure. Given how many Americans still believe in either a Saddam-WMD or a Saddam-Al Qaeda connection, as ugly as this is getting, its still not fundamentally unpopular. Certainly, the situation in Baghdad seems incredibly untenable for all concerned, and I certainly would like to see extremely harsh questioning (if not a pie in the face) of any governmental official that insists that the "biased media report the good news too".

Nobody reported that New York City's non-terrorist related homicide rate dropped to just about zero right after September 11th... damned biased media...
