I've drawn no conclusions from the announcement by Attorney General John Ashcroft (via Deputy A.G. James Comey) that Ashcroft was recusing himself from the Valerie Plame investigation to avoid further appearance of impropriety. An uncharacteristically intelligent decision from the Attorney General must have an explanation. Yes, he owes Karl Rove's consultancy a fortune from that senate race where he lost to a dead man, but I tend to agree with assessments I've seen that that alone does not implicate Karl.

Its all troublesome to me-- just give me 15 minutes with Bob Novak, and I'll tell you who the leaker or leakers are or were. And after our post 9-11 conduct, especially our conduct in Iraq, please don't tell me that that's not how the United States does things, because that would be a lie. But here at home, when "investigating" Republicans, suddenly its innocent until proven guilty and everybody has... what do you call them... rights.

The special prosecutor is actually already on the Department of Justice payroll, Chicago United States Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald (his earlier attempt at hanging out a shingle in Tel Aviv having proved unsuccessful). While some (Joe Lieberman comes to mind) might criticize the appointment of Fitzgerald as... someone else Bush appointed, Fitzgerald has the distinct advantage of not being based in Washington, and more importantly, not being John Ashcroft.
He is recently credited with the indictment of former Illinois Governor George Ryan, another Republican.

I don't know. This isn't exactly Whitewater: somebody called Bob Novak, committed a serious crime (if not treason) on the probable direct orders of someone very high up in the White House, and Bob Novak can simply say who it is (preferably under torture), and we can save the taxpayers millions of dollars, and the unlucky stiff who Novak identifies has to resign and do some time.

What am I missing?

The preliminary investigation is over and it is time to make a decision: close it or form a grand jury and start giving people immunity.

Ashcroft doesn't want to make the decision and has shifted it to the head of the Chicago office.
