February 26, 2004, The Speaker WANTS SILENCE

Presumably getting lost amidst the news that Howard Stern has been yanked off of some radio stations and Rosie O'Donnell is planning to head to San Francisco to get hitched, we might overlook this small matter: Speaker of the House Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) has advised the White House that contrary to its public request and in response to its private one, he will not permit legislation to be introduced extending the deadline for the Commission investigating the events of September 11th beyond its May 17th expiration date (via Drudge). On a related note, Condoleeza Rice will NOT testify publicly at a hearing before that Commission. The President and Vice-President have also inserted their own limitations (they will only meet privately with the chair and vice-chair).

Query: do these people seriously expect anyone to believe that it is NOT the White House that wants the 9-11 Commission's mandate to expire, with its report rushed and (hopefully) incomplete? Surely, the House Speaker has no independent interest in denying the Commission (which has been hampered by White House stonewalling since its inception) a little more time to complete its report? Well, I'm sure there are SOME loyalists who will believe anything that the Administration tells them, but for anyone who might CARE about whether our government is capable of averting other attacks directed at the heart of our most important cities, the Commission's work might just be, you know, important, this seems just another White House stonewall.

Whether it does or not, the White House is making it look like it has something to hide with these tactics. I think that nutbar conspiracy theories about Bush and Co. being "in on it" are really not the issue. What we have here, however, would seem to be a case of the grossest of negligence: while the President derides approaching terrorism as a "law enforcement matter", the fact is, there is enough evidence to conclude that law enforcement efforts that might have helped uncover the 9-11 plot were interfered with for political reasons, leads weren't followed up, field agents had no coordination with headquarters, etc., etc.-- in ways that could have EASILY been overcome had their been political will to do so (and without flushing the Bill of Rights into the toilet)-- as a law enforcement matter after all.

I could be wrong about this, but that would involve letting the 9-11 Commission have sufficient access, resources and time to make a complete and thorough investigation. And that doesn't look likely.

same ol' same ol' stuff. the administration has pre-determined what the outcome must be and it will make that outcome happen, no matter the facts of the case. Neo-Lysenkoism.

Of course, today, on the 27th, after the President agreed to give the two commission reps just ONE rpt ONE hour of his time, there was a massive about face...after John McCain and Joe Lieberman threatened to hold up a pending bill. You truly have to wonder about these folks: wouldn't it have been easier to have agreed to the two month extension earlier and not gotten all the bad publicity? But in the end it looks like they have defused part of this developing issue (I still can't figure out how GWB can say he will only give them one hour to discuss 911.)

I am in a moral quandry.
My friend searches for http://detectives.any1in.us/detective.html detective on google to screen potential roommates.
He found any1in.us , but did not visit.
I, on the other hand, searched for http://detectives.any1in.us/foster.html foster and found any1in.us.
I went there and found that http://www.any1in.us/encrypt.html encrypt were easier to find than on google.
Should I tell him that his potential roommate is a http://www.any1in.us/cheating-spouses.html cheating spouses ?

So Betty, my miss, taunt honor me kiss, In hell there' no innkeeper' daughter like this! Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
