This week's visit to Pravda gives this high-fallutin' analysis by Jeff Wenker of why the modern American swing voter/NASCAR Dad reminds him of Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov. Its the whole head, heart, conscience thing (ego, superego, id?) breakdown among the three brothers-- can the American voter put it all together and figure out that a leader who only THINKS he is a cocksure superman is just another human being-- and in inferior one at that-- or will they believe the press releases?

Its interesting. I don't know if I believe it. Certainly, Wenker is right that most Americans have never even heard of the Bros. Karamazov (except, maybe, in the context of a comedy juggling act), and would laugh at some of Dostoevsky's quainter notions (such as "the health of a society can be best measured in its prisons".) But hey-- all these furriners have these strange ah-deas. Not like OUR favorite writers... like the guy that wrote that Hungry Caterpillar thing...

To be honest, its a pretty grim analysis: Wenker asserts that the American voters are even more shallow and stupid than I think they are-- and that is just too damned much (recall: more American voters voted AGAINST the current Prez than for him; THAT does not make the current Prez "illegitimate", of course-- other things do that).

I don't know: my favorite bit from the Bros. K. remains the "Grand Inquisitor" speech, which basically points out (for those few of my readers who don't know) that if Jesus were to come back, say, around the time of the Spanish Inquisition, the Grand Inquisitor would find it absolutely necessary to execute him again, immediately.

(Which reminds me... I just read a CNN Breaking News e-mail that former President Reagan's health is deteriorating (the White House announced). Could we be seeing the initiation of the phrase to replace "stay the course"... win another one for the Gipper? Developing...)

Ah, the Russian sensibility. At least, unlike the Americans, at least the Russians HAVE a sensibility.

I am in a moral quandry.
