July 16, 2004, And Elsewhere in the Axis of Evil...

This week's visit to Pravda tells us of a stunning new development in the Iranian fashion world: the imposition and enforcement of Sharia dress codes. Given the certain influence Iran and its mullahs are about to have in our little Iraqi protectorate, just consider this one more advance for women in the "new Iraq" when failure to wear your burqa properly becomes a stoning offense. See, we brought these people freedom and democracy. Were we going to take the word of a mad man? Sheesh.

And from the other Axis of Evil TM member we haven't invaded (yet), we consider the case of one Sgt. Charles Jenkins, U.S. Army (Deserted), now 64 and sick, who may (or may not) be turned over to American custody during or after he is treated in Japan for complications from stomach surgery; Jenkins evidently deserted from his patrol mission along the good old Korean DMZ back in the 1960's to the Stalinist shithole across the line, where he was living for decades as "An American in Pyongyang" (Gershwin wouldn't have gone near that one!).

The U.S. military insists it has a status of forces agreement with Japan that will require that sovereign nation to kowtow to its former occupier and hand him over (IIRC, we do still have an awful lot of personnel in Okinawa, which is in... Japan...). Well, maybe it will... and maybe it won't... I understand why the military would pursue those who go AWOL and/ore desert (unless they're the son of someone important... then they might grow up to be President or something). Discipline must be maintained-- and it is a disservice to the 99.9% plus of military members who serve this nation honorably and creditably. On the other hand, the guy is apparently sick--best to let him get his treatment first, and then decide what to do with him (not that anyone's asking me).

This has been your Axis of Evil TM round-up...

Well, there is a perfectly good naval hospital in Yokosuka (at least, my knee healed after being treated there).

Bygones, I'd say, but then I'm not a vindictive sort who has guilt issues about deserting his own TANG job back in the early 1970s.

"Slimfast to Underwrite GOP Convention"

In its continuing efforts to portray itself as a product of family values, the Slimfast parent company has agreed to underwrite the entire costs of the GOP Convention. Except of course, those costs relating to security.

At first you're here, then you're there, and then you're dead.
Ya know?

Given that the Talking Dog has taken a job in Iraq as a mercenary, we need to keep his blog going. I will therefore take it upon myself to continue his blog, with the same insightful, fair and balanced reporting to which you have become accustomed. Here goes:

US in Iraq: What's up with that?
War on Terror: What's up with that?
Bush as President: What's up with that?
Republican Convention: What's up with that?
And finally,
The Middle East: What's up with that?
Thank you. Comments are welcome.

My above comment was, of course, written with deference to the great Cliff Clavin. Speaking of Clavins, we have not heard from WallyCoxLives for as long as TD has been absent. Coincidence? Hmmmmmmmm.

What a nice crustacean you are, Mr. C....Certainly TD will be thankful for your efforts to carry on in his and/or Wally's absence.

Alicia,
As always you are a class act. I finally had to give up the TD blog because the pressures of running a daily column were just too great.

Posted by They Call Me Mr. Crabcake at July 20, 2004 12:44 PM

Well, Mr. C, You did a fine job despite the pressure and even resurrected some vintage "Cheers"...Cliffy Boy would be proud. This blog is by far one of the most informative and entertaining things I read each day. I am relieved to know it shall carry on when TD takes a break. Merci...
