And so we enter a phase of the War to Avenge Papa Bush TM (or, as some would say, "The War to Show Papa Bush that Mine's Bigger TM"), which will probably be remembered by future generations of Moslems as fondly as the Crusades, will be seen as one of the Great Turning Point's in Usama bin Laden's efforts to unite the Islamic world against the Infidel Morons, and in short, is something we should-- no must-- immediately stop now, while we still can. Obviously, I'm talking about the Battle of Najaf, where "Iraqi forces" (authorized by PM Allawi-- who will rightly be considered as little more than an American puppet-- because that is, after all, what he is) are taking the lead in raiding the most sacred ground in Shia Islam, to try to unseat the militias led by the newest poster-boy for... something or other... Muqtada al-"Baby" Sadr. The Shrine of Imam Ali and surrounding grounds (including the burial ground for over 2,000,000 Shia) is ablaze with battle.
There is only one thing we can do: pull out, cordon the area off, invite the locals to leave-- fast-- and then hang around while we deprive the holdouts of food and water until they give up, or die. And declare victory (we can do that at any time). Otherwise, we have to negotiate and give Sadr a piece in the new government. What we cannot do is what we are doing: engage in, or even support, a military conflict where it will be believed (the reality is irrelevant) that we despoiled and damaged or even destroyed the holiest sites in Shia Islam.
I suggested, in a fit of rage shortly after 9-11, that we consider bombing missions against Mecca and Medina-- as after all, 9-11 was ostensibly a Saudi-sponsored attack on us (albeit by "dissident" Saudi royals in their own internal power struggle). Obviously, that's the sort of thing OBL would be hoping for-- to stir up the juices of angry and resentful Moslems for all time.
But destroying the Shrine of Imam Ali will do nicely for OBL's purposes-- and he can have Mecca and Medina for his own haj too! This Najaf maneuver of ours will, in a bizarre sense, probably help out Israel-- because the Iranians and their Syrian and Hizbollah clients will be more inclined to take the battle directly to the despoiler of the Shia holy sites (that would be us Amurrcans). One 9-11 was enough, thanks.
The 9-11 report was conspicuously silent on a number of points, such as our Middle East policy (including but by no means limited to our relationship with Israel), our insane dependence on foreign oil because of our absurd inefficient energy use (and tax incentives to waste more), and of course, long term policy suggestions re: Mid East policy.
Well, we can start by calling the dogs off Najaf. I know I'm pissing in the wind--but this is truly the equivalent of an invading Moslem army sacking the Vatican.
I know I'm screaming to the ether, but will someone who isn't a complete f***ing moron have the good sense to listen and stop this madness, while we still can?
