Here's a story I have been neglecting amongst the trivia of idiotic issues like war and peace and the integrity of our government-- something that most of the American people care far more deeply about than, oh, casualty figures from Iraq, or even the economy: Kobe Bryant and the accusations he sexually assaulted a young woman in Colorado.

It seems something happened in Los Angeles upon Kobe's return there; he made a 911 call because something bad was happening to a woman there, perhaps his wife Vanessa. Allegations that Kobe misled investigators in Colorado at their initial interviews are surfacing. I am reminded at a press conference where Kobe told the assembled reporters something like "You know me... you know I wouldn't do this..." Well, aside from the fact that no one can really crawl into the darkest recesses of anyone else's heart or mind and "know" someone else wouldn't do something, in Kobe's case, no one
really knows him (though my understanding is that he is not exactly regarded as a nice guy).

Certainly, I would find allegations of something like this about, say, David Robinson or Tim Duncan or even Kobe's teammate Shaquille O'Neal far more unsettling. They all have public personae which seem to be of the "nice guy, solid citizen" variety. But Kobe? Who knows? An instant millionaire superstar celebrity as a teenager, one can imagine that Kobe is just not used to anyone saying "no", especially after starting to "fool around".

I will readily admit that, unlike the vast majority of the American people, I really couldn't give a shit about Kobe-- to me, he's just another spoiled, pampered celebrity who will get different treatment because of his status as such-- doubtless far superior treatment to what you or I would receive. If Kobe is guilty of an indiscretion (he's admitted that much), but innocent of a crime (we have merely the wild accusations of a woman supposedly twice admitted for drug treatment), then his celebrity status has not served him well. On the other hand, if he is guilty as hell, his money (and celebrity status and attendant power) will probably permit him to buy reasonable doubt.

Either way, Kobe won't be getting a "fair" trial.

Just another fact of life in George W. Bush's "Winner take all America".
