From Pravda this week, a story I'm still trying to figure out: Chechnya's parliament imepached Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov, who has now been relegated to "a field commander".
Chechnya, the breakway Republic, is under the heavy handed presence of the Russian Army, many of whose members are routinely killed by Chechen guerrillas. But as a unit of Russia, Chechnya has an official duma and an official representative to Russia. Pravda's story is imprecise, but I think from context, this is the breakway separatist parliament that took this action (though its not clear why).
Perhaps the separatist movement of the breakaway republic is... breaking up? Perhaps its just a stunt by the Chechens to call attention to themselves? Who knows? Chechnya is a tough one: Putin's Russia has been incredibly brutal in suppressing the uprising, and the United States has been muted in criticism (lest our hands be tied in being brutal against "Islamic terrorists"). And yet, the brutality is no longer popular in Russia-- polls show most Russians favor a negotiated solution. But a cornerstone of Putin's career has been toughness on Chechnya, and the Moscow theatre incident certainly did not do much to change the likelihood of this.
Well, we'll see. A protracted internal conflict goes on-- with an interesting wrinkle.
