Its been too long since I linked to Israeli blogger Imshin, one of the brightest lights of the blog world. But with this piece, she has transcended blogging, frankly, she has transcended everything, with this observation of the universe that is in the traditions of the greatest sages and mystics ever to exist. (I'm blown away by it.)

Imshin wrote this from Israel on 10 September, a day after terror attacks killed 15 human beings in her nation (including several in her city), and the day before the second anniversary of the day terrorists killed over 3000 in mine. Read it. These selections are from Imshin:

"Watching my mother die I realized that life has no meaning.

We are, and then we are not. That is all.

There is no meaning to death. There is no such thing as a needless death or an unnecessary death, just as there is no such thing as a meaningful death.

We live. We die. "

Am I writing this because yesterday two bombs strapped to two different people, seeking immortality, blew up and killed fifteen people and injured many others who were not seeking anything? Am I writing this because tomorrow is the second anniversary of a day on which a group of people, also seeking immortality, flew two planes into two tall buildings, killing thousands?

No I am not. I am writing it because it is the way of the world. We may try to escape this by creating theories and ideologies and belief systems, because it is very difficult to accept. But we are just deluding ourselves. It remains the way of the world regardless of what we believe. It is not sad or regrettable. It is just the way it is."

Einstein once said something like "God did not play dice with the creation of the universe". As brilliant as Einstein was, he was wrong. Absolutely and totally wrong, in that statement. As Imshin has observed, that is precisely what God did (whether one believes in a Supreme Being or not). Chance, or hazard (the world derived from the Spanish "azar" ultimately from the Arabic word for backgammon, itself a game, in part, of chance) is embedded in every fibre of the universe-- even in its creation. Indeed, there is an old Jewish story that with the creation of the current universe, on his 26th or 27th attempt, this time including the creation of man, God said something like "I hope I get it right this time." (I'm stealing a lot of this from not just Imshin, but also a philosopher named John G. Bennett)

Looked at this way, with God Himself (or whatever force created the universe, even if the universe was created by mere chance itself) not purely "omnipotent", or even "omniscient", but even God subject to hazard and chance, now should give a greater understanding of "evil", and uncertainty, and chaos, and everything else that we observe to actually exist, even while we simultaneously insist that some "ideal" world can exist where we don't have to deal with such things. Because, as Imshin observes, there is no such world.

There's only this one. And, for better or worse, that is all there is.

I feel sorry for her then, on another note, if we are all but a random cosmic mishap, for my enjoyment in this realm, could she jump off a building, I have this building around my area and every time I pass by it I wonder if when someone jumps off it will they bounce ? Anyways since she doesnt give a shit about this world, maybe if she just jumped it would be one more less fuck up we already have in this fucked up world. How the fuck can she say that, so what terrorist crashed planes in the buildings and strap bombs and blow shit up. We all have to deal with, but when another human being just gives up like that on all of us, well go fuck yourself and get the fuck outta my world. Now learn to fucking smile and show these fucking scum bag terrorists what the fuck the free world is all about.

I'll try to be polite about this: I think you missed her point (and mine). She's not "giving up"; she's telling the rest of us hat its o.k. to let loose of our illusions-- because, other than in delusion, there really IS no grander meaning out there-- there is only us, and what we bring to the table, what little love and joy we can get out of the universe in the fleeting instant we are conscious of it.

But feel free to hold on to your own illusions and delusions, such as the notion that by inflicting aggression and violence on a people that did us no harm and posed no threat to us, we will show "terrorirsts what the fuck the free world is about." (Of course, I may be the one deluded in thinking that the "free world" was better than all that. Mybad.)

Thank you for being polite, in my post I did not even mention violence or aggression, in fact those arent even resorts in my mind to deal with this. I dont feel sorry for people like you guys or mad, I just wish I could share some of my own experiences with people because from my own Ive realized that there is a fuck load more to this life then this material world which we are concious as you say for a fleeting moment. I totally agree when you say we are inflicting violence and aggression on entire populations who have nothing to do with anything hostile towards America and her allies and right now we are stuck in endless cycles of destruction, but it can all be peaceful, it can all be good. Ive seen it, Ive felt it, theres more to this life then just the everyday's we go through.

To go back onto the free world idea, I think its funny from my eyes we are living in the free world, but what are we free from exactly. Free from what ! Im just happy enough breathing but being able to freely post this is a gift some people could not even fathom. I think it is totally up to people on the internet to change this fucking planet because finally we will all be able to have the information we need readily. Every single death on this planet is a complete tradegy, wether from war, or peace, the death of one of us is the greatest loss, if people realized the potentials of being human and could realize there is an individual oneness and that we are a human family I think things will start to change. Not to sound psycho or anything, but as a human I dont know how many others are out there, but I can feel a change, just a change of conciousness or something, I beleive humans are about to do something major with themselves, I can feel it.

I stand corrected.

You appear to be a zen-master after all. There is indeed more to the universe than the eye can see-- that's why we need microscopes and telescopes and darmas and mystics, and even religions (though not net, I would say religions these days tend to be more dstructive than helpful). Yup-- there's more there than meets the eye-- including ultimate enlightenment.

However, there also ISN'T more to the universe than the eye can see: its exactly what it is in front of you, free of interpretation or baggage-- it just is, providing joy, or love, or hate, or sadness, or whatever it evokes.
And when that realization hits you, that is also total enlightenment.

I think Imshin's observations show us that she may be there.
