In a blast from my own past (I grew up in Rockland County, New York, where the famous Brinks robbery took place), convicted participant Kathy Boudin was released from prison after 22 years for her participation in the robbery (and murder) for the "Black Liberation Army" in which two Nyack police officers and a Brinks guard were killed.
Boudin was a model prisoner who pled guilty to a count that carried a 20-year to life sentence. One clearly wonders whether had she not been a counter-culture darling, a woman, and White, if participation in such a visible multiple murder (in which two of the victims were police officers) would have been granted parole. On the other hand, in the United States in 2003, 22 years is a really long time to be in prison for mere homicide-- its not like Boudin possessed crack cocaine or something that warrants a really stiff sentence.
Boudin was on the list of people that then President Bill "But how will it benefit Hillary's campaign?" Clinton considered offering pardons in his waning days in office, but he declined to do so then.
I don't know, frankly, about this case. Boudin was certainly a Brinks participant, but not the trigger-person. She's hardly a babe in the woods. On the other hand, in a less high profile case, her participation would probably have resulted in her release years ago. On net, parole is a good thing: it makes prisons easier to run by giving the prisoners some incentive to be... good prisoners. Yes, we have the occasional Willy Hortons, but then, no system is perfect. Still, most prisoners will eventually be released, and we should at least try to make prison a less horrible place.
Well, who knows. The families of those involved are justifiably irate; but then, Boudin seems to have paid the debt to society to which she was sentenced. All around, a tough call I'm glad I don't have to make.
