Today is the second anniversary of this here blog (yes, this one), making this, interestingly, one of the older blogs in blogtopia (yes, skippy coined that term), as well as the "36th most important blog" according to blogstreet by its "biq" measure, although, to this day, we're not exactly Andy Sullivan in terms of traffic. On this Blogoversary II, we give thanks to the many who have contributed to the existence, continuation or dare I say it, "success" of this blog; hence, thanks to Mrs. TD and the Loquacious Pup, thanks to the invaluable assistance of the "Unseen Editor" (whose a bit more unseen these days thanks to the Movable Type Revolution), thanks to my fellow bloggers who have seen fit to acknowledge your talking dog's existence from time to time, and, of course, thanks to you our readers, some of whom have been reading a while, without whom this would be entirely a solipsistic exercise, instead of just mostly.

As is customary, I give you the original post from September 18, 2001, which is pretty damned self-explanatory (other than at that time, I was the "Left Leaning Dog", in a sort of point-counterpoint with the "Rabid Dog", who is not my brother Fred of The Rabid Dog, but is the blogger now known as The Raving Atheist.)

Happy Rosh Hashanah Greetings from Brooklyn: Gateway to Ground Zero

Brooklyn, September 18, 2001. Its now one week after "the day" your left leaning dog got to work a little early to prepare for a trial that day that now seems less important than it did that day, early enough to look over his left shoulder at the WTC out the window after a sonic boom, airplane whine, and giant popping sound, which followed by a shower of glass and paper, and a few minutes later, bodies falling, and a few minutes later, another boom and pop, followed by even greater fireworks, followed by a convoluted escape on foot. As your LLD was that close to the events of 9/11 (1 city block, or perhaps a couple of hundred yards across air), it should come as no surprise that his office appears to be one of the casualties; we've been confined to our neighborhood in Brooklyn since -- your not normally phobic LLD just can't bring himself to drive over bridges even now even to see his family at the Jewish New Year. So we end up reflecting: to the backdrop of round the clock news coverage (being LLD, a lot of that coming from, naturally, National Public Radio).

The human implications are unfathomable: people at one degree of separation are gone. The geopolitical implications to follow. Unfortunately, the only logical national response to this (no, not an absurd "war on terrorism" which will doubtless kill the wrong people and further radicalize the nuts, even if it makes the people who voted for Bush feel better): (1) a radical national energy conservation program with a goal of self-sufficiency (which would include development of ALL domestic energy sources, including the disturbance of a few caribou), (2) careful control of our borders, including the denial of all visas, if not termination of diplomatic relations, with most Arab Middle Eastern countries, and, obviously, (3) European and Israeli style security measures, which would, presumably, make short-distance air travel sufficiently untenable so that we might develop faster trains. Of course, these actions are precisely what will NOT happen because, last November, nearly half of this country decided to forget RECENT history-- that the very forces -- my God, the very same people -- that (largely, though obviously not exclusively) put us in this fiasco (i.e. a war fought in the Persian Gulf in the name of cheaper gasoline, followed by a ten year energy bacchanalia here) have been restored to the throne, and will doubtless act in their parochial and, perhaps, regional interests -- and not in the national interest. Any general voice of optimism will be welcomed!!!

I certainly think I was pretty damned prescient, all things told. For those blog history buffs who may want to peruse our entries in "the day" (and who, by definition, should find something better to do!) you will note an angry tone from yours truly, and for months, I was screaming for the President to... invade Iraq. Surprised? You shouldn't be.

The anthrax terror which followed 9-11 certainly smelled of... Iraq; there was the photo of Mohammed Atta meeting with an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague, which was not discredited for some time; there was compelling evidence that Ramzi Youssef, mastermind of the first WTC bombing plot, was connected to Iraq. But mostly, there was suddenly urgency: if a wildcard country that directly or indirectly was willing to attack New York and Washington was potentially developing nuclear weapons, the threshold for action was much lower. I felt that immediate action, with 9-11 still that fresh, would help get a solid international bloc supporting the effort, not to mention, the American people's tolerance for such an action would be substantial.

By the summer of '02, it became clear that the President was more concerned with the political value of an Iraq campaign than with the military value. My feeling was that, in waiting a full year by that point, if Saddam were truly a threat as claimed, Bush should have been impeached (if not flogged) for allowing Saddam to plan his worst for an entire year post 9-11. Of course, in the alternative, if Saddam were not a threat, then imminent military action was not necessary-- and not appropriate. But Bush played the tough guy thing to perfection to win back the senate in the '02, and IMHO, he is doing it all again largely as a matter of political campaign rather than a military campaign. While George W. Bush is not the antichrist (much as I enjoy razzing the man and his policies) the fact is, Bush has shown himself to be crassly political, and absolutely shameless about trying to take political advantage of just about everything in a way that is not merely inappropriate, but often contrary to the spirit of this republic (that was polite, eh?).

Well, the blogging adventure turns two today; somehow, we've kept with it, and we'll see how long it goes (even if blogging is so 2002).

I'm still a bit confused on your Iraq thoughts, TD. I'm pretty sure I remember at least a couple of posts from you about how the whole Iraq enterprise had drained resources from the battle against al-Qaeda. Wouldn't that have been true to an even greater extent if Bush had mounted an invasion of Iraq one year before he ended up doing it?

Simply put, I didn't have a crystal ball. From where I was sitting in a smoldering New York City in late 2001, it sure looked to me like 9-11 went back, directly or indirectly, to Saddam (the President has just confirmed for all that THERE WAS NO 9-11 SADDAM RELATIONSHIP AT ALL).
We didn't know that then. I suspect he DID know that then.

Certainly, in the fall of 2001, I couldn't have predicted the path of the "War on Terror", or how Bush would later play Iraq, or the fact that over 2 years later, the little brother of George W. Bush's first business partner Salem bin Laden would still be at large after the entire world declared war on him. But there you go...

By the summer of 2002 (I believe the key post is August 9, 2003), I had concluded that an attack on Iraq would NOT assist the "War on Terror", and after that, concluded that it would actually HURT said War on Terror (which, to this day, I remain convinced it had), and formally opposed the War in Iraq, which ultimately led me to participate in protests against it.

That's been my position since.

In other words, do you think it's just the particular war we got that has been counter-productive, or could you still have supported an Iraq war if it had been done in a not incompetent/ideological/partisan manner?

I don't know; that's the fun of 20-20 hindsight. I do think that regardless of outcomes (its looking like Saddam was not in much of a positino to put up a defense, either this year or a year earlier) what Bush has done by his timing was maximize the political and human and financial cost of the Iraq action to the nation in a thinly veiled attempt to maximize political benefit to himself. Our friends on the right, of course, insist on calling that "courageous leadership".
