In an interesting development (to me) the Bill and Melinada Gates Foundation has granted $51 million to the New York City school system, much of which will be used for the development smaller high schools in the Bronx.
We have to hand it to Bill Gates for not having hard feelings; while Bill would doubtless be simpatico with Mayor Bloomberg, like himself, one of the richest men in the United States, New York City's school chancellor is none other than Joel Klein, who prior to his service to the schools of my fair city, was the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division, who famously hounded Bill Gates and Microsoft for years in one of the largest and most high profile antitrust cases ever brought. Well, Bill is a big man, I suppose. A big man who knows that good publicity is more important than holding grudges (at least, on this occasion).
Query whether the answer to troublesome public schools is to throw money at them? Anyway, at least its not taxpayer money, and Bill won't miss it: he'll just print more.

I heard that the money is specifically targeted to build new high schools, smaller high schools. The "Rule of 150" is to be applied, the idea that a social group of 150 or less is manageable and many of the ills of ours systems come from trying to handle events among groups larger than that.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the Gates thing. I guess I can't hate all rich people. *sigh*
