Large parts of the East Coast are cleaning up from Hurricane Isabel, which is now downgraded to a tropical storm in the Midwest, but which was blamed for at least 15 deaths. I guess I find it amazing that such major weather events here that would often kill thousands in East Asia or other places during typhoon season tend to kill far fewer people here. I guess its a testament to better early warning systems, better building construction, and in some cases, I suppose better luck. Of course, we do tend to be in a better position to evacuate coastal areas than, say, Bangladesh.
Washington, D.C. and the federal government was preemptively shut down by Presidential order ahead of the storm-- preemption is big over at the White House, as you all know.
