We are most saddened to hear that un-celebrity celebrity George Plimpton died at 76. Plimpton was most famous for his 1963 book "Paper Lion" documenting his try-out with the Detroit Lions, as quarterback (later made into a movie starring Alan Alda as Plimpton, though Plimpton himself appeared in movies, and even once on "The Simpsons"). In an odd celeberity death paring, Plimpton died the same day as singer Robert Palmer.

I suspect that both Plimpton and Palmer were most famous for exemplifying the image of what they were, rather than for specific accomplishments, Plimpton as the qunitessential patrician writer with the Harvard man elocution and the seeming peripatetic knowledge of everything (especially matters sporting), though its hard to remember anything he wrote, and Palmer, of course, as the quintessential rock star, who looked cool and surrounding himself with fabulously cool looking women, though its hard to remember any particular song of his. But there you go. The world will miss them both.

Just about anyone who's heard of Robert Palmer will remember his most famous song, "Addicted to Love." There are probably a lot more people who know the song, but not the guy who sang it, than vice versa.
