This week's visit with Pravda gives us this somewhat chilling (to me) story of the celebration in Latvia of the opening of a cemetary of Latvian Legionnaires, code for Latvian members of the Nazi SS during World War II. Now, sixty-four years (do you think this Beatles thing is EASY? BTW, I believe that this is post #64 of the Beatles song title era) after the start of World War II, any of us must recognize that different people have different perspectives on the bloodiest conflict in human history. (And I daresay, this is not an event likely to be widely reported in Western sources.)

I remember fondly (not) that among the first acts of the newly independent Lithuanian parliament in the early 90's was exoneration of Lithuania's Nazis. In the Baltic Republics, the memories of the abuses and horrors of the Soviet era are clearly more recent than the horrors of the Nazi era. Certainly, opposition to the Soviet Union was the defining characateristic of Latvian nationalism for half a century.

Still, to me, I would find the participation of my countrymen among the worst criminals in the history of the universe to be something that, well, would not be cause for a solemn ceremony of remembrance.

But that's just me.
