In Bangkok, Thailand for an economic summit among leaders of Asian and Pacific nations, President Bush offered a non-treaty treaty-like "we won't hurt you" proposal with North Korea that seems not to have impressed the North Koreans, as they test fired a new ballistic missile into the sea.

The official policy of the Bush Administration seems to involve a bizarre diplomatic dance-- we'll sort of talk to you (but we won't); we'll sort of hint about giving you waht you want (but we weon't). North Korea, predictably, has a strategy of appearing to be insane, in its quest for ever better bribes. Of the two, at least I understand what North Korea is doing.

Again, to reiterate my old joke: Mr. President, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the North Koreans seem to have perfected a nuclear bomb, and their missiles have improved to the point where they can hit Hawaii, Washington, Oregon... maybe even California. The good news is that none of those states voted for you.

This is one of those troubling loose ends. If push comes to shove, of course, even without our help, the South Korean military could probably defeat North Korea, though presumably amdist catastrophic civilian, military and economic losses. I don't know if the United States military could handle a major conflict in Korea these days, as a result of the Iraq operation, though I guess the plans exist for such a contingency.

North Korea and the Bush Administration policy toward it is just one of those frustrating topics you'd prefer to walk away from, lest your brain explode. That's where I am on it!!!
