I guess this will be "apostasy Saturday". I figure I will kill several sacred cows in one post, just to get it over with. Recent events have shifted my posts in a direction just outside of the usual doctrinaire liberalism, which, in the modern era, makes me an apostate.

We'll start of course with this observation from Mickey Kaus, i.e., the coverage of standard lefty outlet National Palestine Radio (NPR) of the matter of Terri Schindler Schiavo was not merely "biased", in the sense of "slanted", it simply assumed that there is no other side (i.e., the correct side, that absent clear and convincing evidence of Terri Schindler Schiavo's own expressed wishes that she be put to death in the slow, agonizing, horrifying manner envisioned for her by her husband and the Florida court system might somehow be wrong, does not exist). Indeed, let me call this as I see it: on one side, we have the weakest, most defenseless member of our society-- a disabled woman. On the other side, we have what amounts to a greedy capitalist: by cutting some corners which will result in the certain death of someone else, a great deal of money can be made. Because of some perverse need to devalue inconvenient human life in order to justify late term abortion, guess which side the ACLU and the rest of the liberal universe have lined up on? The side of the greedy capitalist, and against the defenseless woman, of course. And we can feel even more smug about it because the religious right and the Catholic Church and JEB Bush are conveniently on the other side. Nice.

Which brings me immediately to my next point: all things as they currently are, the Democrats will, deservedly, lose, and lose big in 2004 in exactly the same way the Democrats lost the 2002 midterm elections. What the fuck, TD? TD, for God's sake, you've been trying to hone issues and arguments that can beat Bush in '04. You've even sought, obtained, and published, the advice of Dick Morris on this very subject. In fact, TD you hate Bush, and consider him perhaps the most venal man, certainly in effect if not intent (intent would be Nixon) ever to hold the office. And yet-- you think the Democrats will lose to him, and lose big. Why?

Because we ain't got a good reason to vote for us; only reasons to vote against him. Take a look at this from the DNC web site Democrats.Org if you disagree for one second with the premise: the Democratic Party now exists as an umbrella group for various disparate pressure groups, be they based on ethnicity, or sexual preference, or positions on abortion or the environment, and nothing else. Often, some of the desires of these pressure groups run into conflict with each other. What's missing is very simple: any positive reason to vote Democrat, other than pandering to your own particular interest. To his credit, Wes Clark used to be an intelligent man capable of speaking frankly who didn't really play this game. By doing so on an ongoing basis, of course, he may screw himself out of the nomination, which explains why he sounds an awful lot like all the other candidates. Because getting the nomination now seems to be about "progressive bona fides"--i.e., pandering to the widest possible spectrum of specific pressure groups. Whatever happened to the Party of Roosevelt and Truman and LBJ? The party of fucking fairness. The party of the minimum wage and the mandatory pension program and health care for the poor and elderly, the party of protecting the environment because we all have to live in it-- the party of the working man.

When the fuck did it become the party of abortion on demand? (By the way, I do not even disagree with the liberal position on this issue.) But... when the fuck did it become the raison d'etre of the whole Democratic Party? Indeed, of all of liberal ideology? Talk about a party without a soul. (Which leads to the obscene positions taken on the Schiavo matter-- positions that in my opinion, are offensive to the majority of Americans, as well as to key constituencies in key swing states.)

Because of this, the winning issue-- the fact that George W. Bush is running the United States as a piggy bank for himself and his friends-- will be obscured amidst a pile of shit-- a pile of shit of Democrats' own making. We will fuck with our own simple message that its STILL the economy stupid (and that includes Iraq, which by flushing money that should be stimulating domestic activity down the rathole of Halliburton balance sheets and into Dick Cheney's Swiss bank account) will be obscured by... you got it... abortion. (And shame on you, Dennis Kucinich, who took at least a principled position opposing legalized abortion until you decided to run for President; you, sir, are the poster child for a party without principle. Either run sincerely and take your chances, or don't bother running; and you out there who admire Kucinich for spouting his progressive sounding bullshit-- shame on you too.)

So... unless the Democratic Party will run on a platform of economic fairness-- the fact that the deficit generating tax cuts are resulting in curtailment of critical social programs for no good purpose, and instead concentrate on pressure group pander issues like... abortion, gay marriage, racial preferences, medicare prescription drug benefits (ah-- as a pander to the elderly issue, rather than as an "economic fairness" issue), or even (somehow) Israel... we be doomed. Because Karl is just better at playing this game than any Democrat-- and intrinsically, since Republicans are the "me" party and Democrats the "us" party, that's how its supposed to be. Democrats can only win by staying even more "on message" than Bush and his bullshit. And right now, I just don't see that happening. Sorry.

And since we're in apostasy mode, let me commit one last act of apostasy, and bring you this story of some courageous fighter pilots from Israel. These brave officers have had the audacity to speak out against Israel's current heavy handed attacks against the Palestinians, which, as fighter pilots, they are ordered to perform (joining reservists who have objected to serving in the occupied territories as dissenters from the current Israeli order). So far so good-- Israel is a democracy, and its people can express their opinions (as long as they don't violate their military orders, I suppose). WRONG. These dissenters are being vilified in the manner that the right-leaning blogosphere calls all those who disagree with "Saddamites", "idiotarians", "traitors", or worse.

And the piece offers the chilling proposition that Israel will remain a "Jewish" state, but is ceasing to be a free and democratic one. Though founded by Zionist idealists in the Euro-socialist model, and at its roots, a secular Western democracy, the piece points out that the majority of Israel's Jews now come from one of two schools of authoritarianism-- either all-encompassing Orthodox Jewry, or politically totalitarian backgrounds in the former Soviet Union or Arab countries-- and hence, are far more comfortable with an Israeli state that brooks no dissent and otherwise "compromises" free and democratic values than one would like.

Which means, Israel is ethnically Jewish, but otherwise, moving more and more toward the brutal, authoritarian ways of its nasty neighbors in Syria or Egypt or Jordan. You know what? If the ideal of the founders of Israel as a Jewish state in the sense of a progressive beacon of freedom for an oppressed people and all those who would live in coexistence with them is no longer relevant, then there is no longer a need for that state. You heard me: Israel is behaving no better than any other unprincipled authoritarian state; its subjugating a minority, and its military campaign is, if not in degree (yet), at least in the manner of Putin's campaign in Chechnya. No one expects Israel to just "sit and take" the wave of suicide bombings and other terror attacks against its population. But Israel's actions are-- and should be-- held to a higher standard-- a standard it is no longer meeting, and no longer seems to even care about upholding.

And a lot of Israelis are really pissed about that. And they are being crapped on for expressing that opinion-- as Israel ceases to be the free and democratic nation that it was founded as. And if that's what Israel is about-- simply a place where Jews get to live and crap on other people, then I don't think Israel needs to be, any longer. If that's how its going to be, then the "Jewish state" can revert to being New York.

I am at a loss. I just said I generally favor the Democratic party stance on abortions. AS to late term abortions, I posted a couple of days ago on my own view of the "partial birth abortion ban" law the senate just passed-- the law is unconstitutional legally, and practically and philosophically, will result in criminalizing medical procedures designed to save women's lives.
My point here is that I don't see abortion properly linked to the Terri issue, though a lot of conservatives and even more liberals see it as inextricably linked to it, and to me, the result of that (failing) attempt at intellectual honesty is unacceptable brutality. Your previous comment concerned a large buildup of fluid in Terri's head, with the implication (I suppose) that she is effectively already brain-dead, a position as I understand it not even held by her husband's legal team (as this would preclude Terri from "suffering", which must, of course, be eased by an agonizing ten day death thrall).
Finally, I'll just say that one man's "caring about people" is often another man's (especially when that other man is me) pandering. (BTW, I'm not exactly sure where, or if, we actually disagree on anything.)

offhand, I'd say that the Democrats became the party of abortion on demand when the Republicans became the party of demanding no abortions and got a steady two figure percentage of their voters on board.

My personal prejudice is that most of those voters would have voted Republican anyway, but it's the received wisdom.

I think the Democrats should be the party of paying a fair share of the taxes and living indoors, but maybe that's too radical.

If Roe v. Wade were overturned tomorrow the Republicans would lose overwhelmingly next year. Why do you think Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and now Laura Bush all told interviewers that they were pro-choice as their husbands were being inaugurated? Why hasn't W. actually called for Roe to be overturned? Because the GOP is playing a double game on abortion. They know that for most independant women and many GOP women abortion is a top-tier issue when reproductive rights are perceived as being in jeopardy, so they've been signalling them that they're not going to do anything serious to restrict abortion. As long as Roe v. Wade is upheld then abortion is almost a free issue, talk about how much you care about the unborn (and call the democrats baby-killers) without having to actually deliver on your promises. Solution to this situation is obvious, women's reproductive freedom doesn't depend on four naiive liberal do-gooding judges allied with two loyal republican foot soldiers pretending to be moderates, it depends on women voting.
