October 26, 2003, I'll Get You
Well, on this, my 41st birthday, after a bit of fatigue after watching 23-year old Josh Beckett and the (managed by 72-year old Jack McKeon) Florida Marlins defeat the mighty Yankees, this morning, I saw this semi-shocking account of the near-death escape of Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz from the Al Rashid in Baghdad after a rocket attack there (which attack killed at least one American, a colonel).
The Al Rashid Hotel (at least according to National Palestine Radio (NPR)) is a "symbol of the American occupation". I suspect that the bad guys were aware that the DepSecDef was in the region, and it would have certainly been a huge blow to the Great Satan if the leading member of the Jewish cabal-- the very guy who wanted to attack Iraq within hours of the September 11th attacks-- were knocked off himself in Iraq.
I will take off the tinfoil hat a moment and give the Bush Administration credit for at least wanting to do the right thing by Iraq (and ignoring the calls of naysayers such as those who protested in Washington yesterday calling for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq which would, of course, open Iraq completely for a civil war battle royale between Shiite extremists backed by Iran, Saddam loyalists, and Al Qaeda). Unfortunately, the politics of tax cuts, and the politics of no real sacrifice, especially by millionaires, has meant that Iraq (and Afghanistan) are half-assed, undermanned (and strangely, underfunded) efforts. Had the Administration paid the political price to deploy the men and materiel asked by Generals Franks and Shinseki (almost triple the current level), and some other intelligent decisions were made, such as continuing to pay the Iraqi army instead of turning it into tens of thousands of armed rogues, things would be going much better.
It can still be turned around. Though, I think it will only be turned around when the current gang that can't shoot straight is shown the saloon door. Which, as you know, I fear may be a while.
