Once in a while, only a non-Beatles title will do; such is the case of the announcement of the resignation of Eduard Shevardnaze, President of Georgia for 11 years, and before that, Soviet Foreign Minister, after a corruption scandal including allegations that the most recent election (in which Shevardnaze was reelected) was fraudulent led to massive protests in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.

Georgia, though strategically important, crept along as one of the poorest of the ex-Soviet Republics, with a Third World economic level, and corruption was believed to be rampant. Well, now it has ousted its leader since Soviet days, and hopefully, better times will be at hand. Time will tell what the global strategic significance of the change in Georgia is.

Still, people wildly upset at what they perceive to be a stolen election is something we Americans should observe very carefully.
