On this day exactly forty years after the fateful day on which President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, we will segue into this story from Pravda about the rhetorical ramping up by the United States of unusually harsh criticism of the International Atomic Energy Agency (and its chief inspector, Mohammed El-Bareidi) regarding Iran's nuclear program. (The segue, of course, is that I was born during the Cuban Missile Crisis-- which explains a lot-- but is also significant in that if we are to accept the Bush Administration's logic about preemptive war-- that any nation intent on developing weapons means to give them to Al Qaeda for use against the United States-- then we are again getting as close to a nuclear exchange as we were during the Kennedy Administration. Sure its a stretch-- but its my damned blog!)

Well, let's try to reconcile this tough talk (which is more than vaguely reminiscent of the tough talk before the Iraq adventure-- though I daresay, I hope our intelligence-- as filtered through the neo-con hawk cabal-- is smart enough to tell us that attacking Iran would be what we call a really bad idea) with this other Pravda story of Secretarissimo Rumsfeld, during a visit to South Korea, announcing that the United States would, of course, defend South Korea against attack from the North Koreans, including if necessary, using nuclear weapons (and it appears the Secretarissimo even allowed the possibility of a first strike). Apparently, the negotiating standard to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis is crazy talk, so it would seem sending Rumsfeld would be the perfect choice. Meanwhile, we seem to rely heavily on China as a broker in this department, which may prove problematic if the Chinese decide to attack Taiwan if the latter decides to have a formal "independence" referendum.

To reoncile all of this, we go back to the Kevin Bacon character trying to keep order amidst chaos at the conclusion of Animal House: "remain calm", "all is in order", "do not panic" as he is promptly trampled to death by a rampaging mob. So hey-- all is in order. Our national leaders know what they're doing; they've demonstrated so with their adept handling of affairs involving Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel-Palestine, Western Europe, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korea...

I picked another bad week to give up sniffing glue...
