Here's an idea whose time is long overdue: a group of 8 Israelis and Palestinians has just left a base in Southern Chile for a mission called "Project Break the Ice" to climb a heretofore unclimbed (and unnamed) mountain in Antarctica. The group, before departing, received calls from both Yasir Arafat and Ariel Sharon. The project is based on the idea that the group must work together as a team (two of the Palestinians, btw, had been jailed in Israel-- one for terrorism). The thought is that this could develop into wider trust and cooperation between
the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

The problems in the Middle East do seem intractable, whether its chosing which country we will unilaterally invade next (as long as its not the Saudis), or justifying why 5-10 of our countrymen must continue to be murdered in Iraq each week even after the capture of Saddam (and 500 have been murdered so far), or figuring out how the Israelis and Palestinians might take a breather from killing each other. Symbolic gestures, while that, sometimes get some traction. Certainly, the presence of our aid workers in Iran right now in response to the earthquake at Bam may ultimately help soften relations between the United States and Iran. Well, we can hope it will.

Anyway, to the 8 intrepid climbers, I wish a hearty "Salaam Alechim" and "Mazel Tov", and whatever other ways one says "good luck and Godspeed". May the promise they bring to the new year be fulfilled.
