Ah, this Iowa thing. As predicted (or at least noted) here, like... yesterday, John Kerry may have... peaked too early! This would seem to be one of the themes of this lengthy piece from MSNBC; Kerry's campaign noting that the solid first place poll numbers meant "we're going to get killed". Dean and Gephardt have reached some kind of a truce, to pull their negative ads (for the moment, realizing that these types of campaigns might piss off key Iowa moderates). Gephardt remains the one guy who probably has to win, though a fourth place finish (maybe even a third place finish) would be a fucking disaster for Howard Dean, especially if Kerry finishes ahead of him (IMHO). Edwards has largely tried to remain "above the fray" in Iowa as his rivals have leveled attack ads at each other.

One of the themes leveled against Kerry is... you got it... he hasn't pandered enough to the farm lobby (or should I say "agri-business" lobby). To me, that's a plus for Kerry, and a minus for everyone on the other side of that issue-- even Iowa voters may understand that a principled candidate is superior to a pandering one, even when its one's own interests not being pandered to. We'll see how this plays out in farm-heavy Iowa.

And our man on the scene (in Hawaii, that is), Steve of Linkmeister sends us this observant piece on one of the more troubling aspects of the 21st century campaign: attacking a candidate for "changing his position" (unless, of course, its George W. "No nation building on my watch" Bush). Sure, one can find something one has said in public, oh, 20 years ago, twist a bit, and voila-- the basis of a bullshit attack ad or stump speech. The fact that Democrats seem delighted to do this to each other (Karl is taking notes, rest assured) is... not a good thing. With luck, some of the more irritating candidates (that's you, Joe Lieberman) will drop out quickly, and the remaining candidates will have to vie for support based on their bona fides and positive messages (and of course, their ability to "look Presidential" and their ability to beat... preferably clobber... the incumbent.)

Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
