And so we have arrived at the day of the Iowa caucuses. In less than 12 hours, the caucuses will be underway, and (maybe) political history will be made. This is the first free-for-all Iowa caucus in around 16 years; despite the hoopla, the Iowa caucuses are credited with putting only one major politician on the map-- Jimmy Carter in 1976. Nonetheless, hoopla it is-- the sheer horse race has been fascinating.

Iowa bloggers Lane and Tina of Eat Your Vegetables blog give us this personal account of why presidential politics in Iowa is... so personal. They add "Taking Back the Country", interspersing reality and reality t.v. (if you call West Wing reality t.v., that is), and noting that there is a strong sentiment among large elements of the populace that Bush & Co. are so irresponsible economically, devastating the entire public fisc for the benefit of a small number of (affluent) people, that "the country must be taken back". Lastly, they give us a prequel called "Iowa Caucus Fun" , from a few days ago, back when Howard Dean was still a viable candidate.

I'll try to note irony, when I can, like CNN's simultaneously comprehensive yet superficial coverage of the caucuses, where perhaps 120,000 people out of over 2,000,000 will participate, compared to just two clicks away where this story of a ten mile long Iraqi march to demand the right to vote (ahead of a U.N. meeting regarding Iraq; over 100,00 participants in that march, by some estimates).

Well, some technical difficulties here at Casa TD have gotten us to a slow start (half the house lost power in the winter storms; hopefully Con Edison's repair crew will keep their promise and show up later today). And your talking dog... has to go to work. But we'll be back with more caucus thoughts, musings, locals... whatever, in due course...
