January 19, 2004, Rock the Vote in Iowa! 3:25 p.m.
The Unseen Editor refers us to Stirling Newberry's Article at "Blogging of the President", suggesting that what voters want is a rock star. Right now, that rock star would be the candidate who is ahead in every poll in which she (yes its a she) is included in: that would be Hillary Clinton, of course. The best stand-in for said "rock star" status might be Wesley Clark-- not participating in Iowa. Which splits the 40% or so of the available "rock star" vote among the top 4 candidates.
John Edwards is a wonderful presence with a great message, running, for whatever reason, a lackluster campaign. He gets some of the rock star vote; Howard Dean, the guy running the state of the art campaign... just ain't a rock star (but he gets some of their vote). Its a fascinating theory; one more factor in this absurdly tight race.
From rock star politician to... Mickey Kaus, who gives us this take-down of the caucus process (scroll down a bit), in which he favorably recites Saletan's discussion of the undemocratic nature of the caucuses. He also gives us his own preferences:
Edwards / Dean / Gephardt / Lieberman / a Bush-Clark tossup / the complete telephone books of all major American cities / Kerry. ...I'm a character voter, not an "issues" voter. Candidates will change their current "issues" positions after the election. New issues will crop up. The best handle we have to predict how a candidate will actually perform in office is character.
You know, I modeled this blog's format after Kaus, and Kaus (far more than Sullivan and Marshall, the only other big-time "blogs" when we started the talking dog in September, 2001, even before "blog" was regularly used) was one of my original inspirations. I've started to disagree with him on many things, of late, notably the war (and I disagree with him about Saletan: so the process is complicated, arcane, and "undemocratic": them's the rules). But you know what? I think he's dead on with the paragraph above (I personally would rather be governed by a 35 year old or older citizen randomly selected from the phone book than by any member of the Bush Administration or family, but... close enough).
