Happy birthday to former President Abraham Lincoln; if that bastard Booth hadn't shot him, Lincoln would be 195 years old today, and I'm sure that as elder, elder statesman of the GOP, he could have prevented the... "party of Lincoln"... from putting up anti-American monsters like the Bush family as the GOP standard-bearers. But life didn't work out that way: Booth knocked off Lincoln in his prime, depriving the nation of the continued services of its third greatest President (after Washington and Jefferson).
Anyway, in honor of Lincoln's birthday, I have declared this "John Kerry Day"-- John Kerry supposedly looks like Lincoln (without the beard), so, there you go!
For those of you who are about to question my liberal bona fides (I don't know where I finished in the voting for best non-liberal blog!) consider what I do in this post and in others for the next few days as a service to other liberals. Kerry, btw, is not one of us. (Dean really isn't either, but then, neither is McCain, and we love them both). That's not my problem with him. My problem is that he is a bad human being. Frankly, so was Bill Clinton, and he went on to be a perfectly good President (even if I despised him, and still do), and in domestic fiscal policy, really a very good President.
Consider this tough love. I point out to you how awful a man John Kerry is for two... no, three reasons: (1) Edwards and Dean have a small prayer of staying in the race (if either of them were to get Clark's hundred or so delegates, and pick up Clark's support, this would be a much closer race); (2) Edwards and Dean are not merely better men than Kerry: they are better candidates-- the "Kerry is more electable" lie is, well... a lie; (3) Kerry has been anointed the putative nominee without really being tested in the primaries; a mano a mano battle between either Edwards and Dean (though sadly not both) will give him an opportunity to strut his stuff and defend himself before having to do it "for real" for the next 8 or 9 months.
First, as dog run member Baseball Musings has reported, John Kerry was a dirty hockey player in prep school-- a really dirty hockey player.
This New York Post piece by Howie Carr notes how Bay State voters are familiar with Kerry's genuine humility and generosity... NOT! Kerry is neither humble, often cutting lines and shouting "Do you know who I am?" and famously ungenerous, despite marrying not one but two kazillionaires (and himself being a Boston Brahmin who went to Swiss boarding school and Yale where he (like Bush) was a Bonesman).
Here's a nice snippet from uberblogger (yes, Markos has now earned that title) Daily Kos , noting Kerry's current opposition to gay marriage (which his home state's high court seems to want to shove down his throat) and his (at the time) courageous opposition to the (blatantly unconstitutional) "Defense of Marriage" Act. (This, btw, is my problem with Kerry: he is an unprincipled political opportunist, who cannot be relied upon to have "core values" of any kind; I couldn't even say that about Bill Clinton-- he believed in something besides himself and his ambition.)

Jefferson as one of the two greatest Presidents?!? Gaaack!!! Forget about his personal flaws, just think about his ridiculously restrictive view of the role of the federal government (we'd all be agragrian farmers still); he would no doubt be greatly in favor of the Court's current Eleventh Amendment jurisprudence; and for someone who thought that the Necessary and Proper Clause restricted Congress' powers, he sure flip-flopped when it came time to make the Louisiana Purchase -- which he thought was unconstitutional but went ahead and did anyway!

"Our man, right or wrong" is their slogan Kathleen; we're "better than them", remember? Besides, I have said that if Kerry gets the nomination, I will fall in and support him, and I would urge all loyal Americans to do the same.
There is no reason, however, why I should give up for one second in trying to get my Party to nominate one of the two men it still has running who will be the best President (neither of whom is named "John Kerry") to secure the nomination. Do I hope the sex thing kills off Kerry? It won't, so the point is moot. To be honest, it will end up strengthening him via a boomerang effect, as will any sliming of him now.
Forgetting the fact that the press and too many other people have anointed Kerry, he's still over 1500 delegates away-- and Dean and Edwards are around 1800 or 1900 delegates away. But no one cares.
Reality, of course, is that I'm a really minor player and besides my four year old daughter, very few people listen to too much that I say! In fact, blogs are still reaching a tiny group of people: we influence few-- mostly we preach to the converted.
I like to think that the 2 or 3 or 4 hundred people who regularly tune in to my blog are the 2 or 3 or 4 hundred most intelligent and discerning people in the world, of course, and I might at least make some people think. That's all I'm trying to do.
So I'll say it again. John Kerry = bad man. There's no other way to say it. Is he
Is John Kerry as good a Presidential candidate as the Democrats can put up? No, he isn't, and that's my point. In fact, he's one of the worst possible candidates we can put up. He can easily be tarred as a Northeastern culturally elite liberal, and he has waffled on just about every issue that has ever come along for what he perceives as his political advantage. Maybe those are GOOD things. Don't know; don't think so.
I refuse to surrender my intellect to what disproportionately powerful early caucus goers and primary goers have to say (I realize, Kathleen, that your state is one of those disproportionately powerful states, usually with a reputation for correcting Iowa's mistakes... until this year). This is still a free country and a democracy, and God damn it, I'm pitching...
But as I prefaced this, nothing bad will happen to Democrats: either we will get a better, different, electable (i.e. Southern) candidate, or Kerry will be that much stronger for having already dealt with most of the kind of sliming he can expect from Karl and Kompany over the next few months early on, when the voters have had plenty of time to forget all about it.
