Yes, yes, I declared this John Kerry Day. But I didn't intend for shit like this accusation from Matt Drudge of a brewing John Kerry sex scandal involving the sudden departure from the United States of a campaign aide. While bloggeure extraordinaire Diana accuses me of starting that rumor (btw, Diana-- I thank you, and my stat-server thanks you!), twasn't me. Personally, I'm tired of sex-scandals. The fact that we are a "stick-up-its-ass" country that gets off on these things notwithstanding, the fact is, sex scandals are usually matters between consenting adults, and really aren't anyone else's business. We've lost too much political time (see Clinton's entire second term!; see also Gary Hart, Bob Livingston, etc.) over this nonsense.
But hey, on the day of America's first legal same sex marriages in San Francisco, why not have a John Kerry sex scandal!!! (BTW, his position on that issue has been all things to all people.)
I'm trying tough love; I don't consider something that might end his candidacy in one fell swoop to be that. Hell, as I told Diana-- I might even have been wrong on the whole "electable" thing-- Kerry may be enough of a driven, self-serving prick to just beat a dirty, underhanded prick like Bush! Phrased that way... he PROBABLY IS the most electable!
No, I'm just going to attack Kerry for things like his railing against corporations moving their tax addresses to Bermuda while his own wife makes a fortune from a corporation... moving its tax address to Bermuda! That sort of thing-- which he will have to defend anyway in the course of running for President.
Drudge is notorious for "publish first, ask questions later"; this may well be bullshit. Or it might even be some kind of RNC tactic. But I'll say this: it's probably a significant test for Kerry. He may score points with a lot of doubters (like me) if he handles it well...

America's first "legal" same sex marriages? Seeing as how the SF mayor's issuing of such licenses explicitly violates California state law, I think their legality is a little suspect.

They're legal in the sense that no one will get arrested for them. I tend to think they "won't hold up in court" either-- but they were performed by people who otherwise have the authority to perform marriages!!! The good news is that since they're not valid under California law itself, other states don't have to recognize them (unconstitutional "Defense of Marriage Act" or not!)
The problem of the insane Supreme Judicial Court ruling persists in the Bay State; if Kerry's own alleged sexual pecadillos don't bite him in the ass first, that decision just might.

Well, my paper boy could perform "marriages" that wouldn't result in anyone being arrested, but that wouldn't make them legal. Local officials are vested only with the authority granted to them under the law. But I get your point. Sorry, didn't mean to nitpick.

I don't think that it's appropriate to use metaphors like "shoving it down their throat" when talking about gay marriage. Once the metaphors start coming, they're going to be hard to stop.

Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
