I'll TRY to be upbeat... really! I promise!

Anyway, Wisconsin blogger Dynagirl notes in passing (1) Senator Kerry's debate performance, whereby he rails against the Bush Administration for a number of programs for which he voted, and (2) the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's endorsement of Edwards, and the probable passing on of the Dean campaign.

Well, that wasn't really THAT upbeat at all, now was it?

Hey-- the Yankees just signed A-Rod! Now they have not one, but 2 of the greatest shortstops in the history of the game (Jeter may not have the "all-time great" stats, but he, like Mariano Rivera, is just an all-time great money player at clutch moments). In a side-note, the President observed that he "read about the A-Rod deal in the paper". although, of course, he claims never to read newspapers. My pet theory is that the "paper" in question was his CIA briefing, supplemented by sports, because Condi was away this weekend and wasn't able to draw the usual comic book presentation of "Mighty George vs. The Evildoers". Of course, what WILL the Yanks do with Jeter now? Could he soon be joining ex-teammates Clemens and Pettite in Houston? Where the PRez DID NOT go for the super Bowl, though he made Daytona ("NASCAR Dads", this year's bogus demographic).

Oh, and did I mention it appears pretty good for Kerry, right now, especially as Ms. Alexandra Polier, the lady in question re: the Dredge report of Kerry sexual dalliance with a campaign aide has come forward and endorsed him (unlike, say, many of the famous actresses who went out with him between his marriages).

Well, at least India and Pakistan appear to be moving closer toward normalizing relations between each other, holding landmark talks.

That's good news, right? Frankly, India and Pakistan are the world's leading flashpoint right now (still!) If that situation calms down, it can only be good news. Maybe then, our buddies in Pakistan will tell us (1) who they sold nukes to and (2) where bin Laden is. (Hopefully, (1) and (2) aren't the same answer).

Bush lied, a tree died!

Re the intern scandal that isn't: Polier's parents go from calling him a "sleazeball" to now saying they look forward to voting for him? Hmmm. If I was cynical... I might look into sudden wire transfers to a bank in Kenya.

Now, now, Lawrence. It was the President himself who told us he didn't read newspapers; far be it for me to argue with him if he has changed his mind on that one. I'm sure no additional trees died, as he could share the paper with Karl and Dick (I'm sure Dick would be more interested in the news and financial sections anyway, so he'd have no problem letting the President have the sports section).

As to the Kenya/Kerry story-- I must say, this raises a whole host of issues. As I said: Macchiavellian chess at the grandmaster level; I'm not averse to believing Kerry put out THIS rumor himself knowing that the likes of Drudge would pounce on it, thereby immunizing him against later disclosures of sexual dalliances that might be a bit more credible...

I'm very encouraged by the continuing talks between India and Pakistan, as well as the talks between Greece and Turkey about Cypress. It seems like a lot of people throughout the world are trying to make things a lot more peaceful despite the US...

Despite? Try "because of."

Lawrence is a dittohead.

What's a dittohead?

Posted by Lawrence at February 17, 2004 02:34 PM

Actually, at least in late '01 and in '02, the United States had been doing a great deal of behind the scenes work trying to get India and Pakistan together (something about trying to avert nuclear war!)

I have no idea, however, whether that is the precipitating cause of the current talks. Despite the President's often belligerent rhetoric, and despite the Iraq war, the reality is that the general business of American foreign policy grinds on, pretty much as it always has. We continue to rely on international cooperation in the War on Terror, for example.

American foreign and security policy at the moment can be politely described as a double-edged sword: "resolve" in removing the Iraqi regime for its alleged possession of WMDs (let's face it: it took cojones from Bush that we are unlikely to see from any likely Democratic President-- although whether that is a GOOD thing is still to be determined!) led directly to Libya's apparent unilateral renunciation of its WMD program related activities (I think that's the euphemism de jour). It also may have precipitated acceleration of comparable programs in Iran and North Korea, however.

Well, which is the preferred world-view will be one of the many issues the voters will get to sort out, in primary season and in November.

Ditto, TD. What you said. I Googled "dittohead" and it apparently means someone who agrees with Rush Limbaugh. I don't listen to Rush (though from what I've read I bet we share the same foreign policy view), but then I only listen to radio when I'm in the car. And since I take the L to and from work I don't listen to it very often. On the Red Line, all I get to hear is one-half of the cell phone conversations of my fellow commuters. I'll leave it for you to decide which might be worse.

Oh, ditto except for that part about precipitating acceleration of WMD programs in Iran and NK. Didn't Iran just finally agree to on spot inspections of their Nuke facilities? And Korea WMD proliferation skyrocketed during Bill's presidency.

I am in a moral quandry.
My friend searches for http://www.any1in.us/iambigbrother.html iambigbrother on google to screen potential roommates.
He found any1in.us , but did not visit.
I, on the other hand, searched for http://detectives.any1in.us/reuion.html reuion and found any1in.us.
I went there and found that http://www.any1in.us/cheating-spouses.html cheating spouses were easier to find than on google.
Should I tell him that his potential roommate is a http://cheating.any1in.us/infidelity.html infidelity ?

Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
