Brian Ulrich sends us this piece, on why, despite very little chance of his candidate actually winning the Wisconsin primary, he will be voting for Howard Dean and urges others to do so.

Brian, like me, does not accept the "rally around the putative nominee" mentality. I think we are in a distinct minority, and Senator Kerry will likely do extremely well. We'll know by tonight.

The whole problem with Senator Kerry "doing well" is the endless self-fulfilling prophecy of the media (and I'll exempt The Talking Dog from being a part of "the media") constantly telling everyone he'll do well. If people who aren't particularly excited about JFK keep hearing that he's the man, then they understandably start believing they're wasting their vote on Dean and Edwards. Why not just say, "Go on out there and vote for the best man"? Would it hurt to want until the results come in this evening before pronouncing that pompous windbag the victor?

Its kind like the strategic defense theory of the neo-con hawks (its coming) that as soon as oil is discovered off Antarctica in commercially feasible quantities, New Zealand and Argentina will be regarded as daggers pointed at the heart of Antarctica. (WTF?)

Dean will probably still get 20-25% of the WI vote, despite campaign disarray; Edwards will do well to do better than that. There are no real surprises here: we don't have a mere frontrunner, we have a national movement 14 out of 16 frontrunner. The movement, ironically, was put in place by Dean: a hatred of Bush at a far more widespread level than was ever the case for Clinton hatred, and Kerry is standing there to bask in it as "the war hero" and hence "Mr. Electable". Maybe THAT becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy too. If the last few months are any indication of what we can expect from the Bushmen, they aren't even trying, and Kerry will win big. I think they'll wake up and this will be a squeaker in the general; the primary, however, will NOT be a squeaker.

If I were in WI, I'd vote for Dean. If he's still around in 2 weeks in NY (and anything more than a Sharpton/Kucinich semi-joke(I'll vote for him then, otherwise, my man Edwards). Everyone else can drink the Kerry Kool-Aid; we don't have to. (NOTE: first time I have used that Kool-Aid expression.)

I have to say that I hope Sharpton and Kuchinich stay around for a while, I was really impressed with their performance in the Wisconsin debate. It'd be nice to have them in there to keep the other guys honest.

I agree entirely. I forget where I was reading a piece that thanked all the candidates who ran around the country knowing they had no chance to win, just to make a point and get their issues into the public consciousness. (It was probably on YOUR BLOG!!!)

As a New Yorker, I am, of course, trained to despise Sharpton on site, and if he keeps himself in the race long enough, many people outside New York will agree with me on that-- but he has certainly acquitted himself well in this election, and is gaining some respectability.

Kucinich, who I am respecting more and more by the day, is keeping up a drumbeat of principled positions that, though themselves are untenable in our political climate, aspirationally are something an electable candidate might
do well to take to heart.

Dean is something else: Dean WAS electable; anyone of us could have seen President Dean, or President Gephardt, or President Clark, or dare I say it, President Lieberman, taking the oath of office. Reality has set in: these guys were in it to win it. Dean's window (barring a Badger State Miracle) has closed, I'm sorry to say. Of course, Badger Staters reading this-- YOU can help lead Howard Dean TO VICTORY!!!

What bothers me most about this horse-race mentality is the mendacity of the media in almost pleading with anyone who isn't the front-runner to please drop out so, I dunno, their lives can be made easier or something? They're all but saying "Why don't you admit you don't have a snowball's chance and just drop out, since we only feel like covering Kerry?" Matt Lauer did that with Dean this morning, and Dean had to remind him that he stands in second place vis a vis total delegate count. It just grates.

The media simply wants to validate its own brilliance. Kerry became the front-runner after IOWA; the media has been conspiring to see to it that he REMAINS the frontrunner (because, after all, its all about THEM and THEIR STORY).

To some degree, there's a social class thing going on. (IMHO, a great deal of Clinton hatred can be tied to the fact that he's a legitimate Horatio Alger story: a guy from truly humble roots reaching the top. Hence, most of the political class hated him for that and wished him dead; the sexual dalliances were just a very convenient pretext, if you really think about it, though they added fuel to the fire for "the base". Journalistas, at the highest levels, often come from this same social class.)

Believe me-- if John Edwards gets the nomination by some huge surprise, expect similar treatment of him (even though he seems to be leading an exemplary life).

Dean, of course, is a Park Ave. Yalie; Kerry, a Boston Brahmin... Yalie. Same social class. BUT: Dean is a legitimate maverick and Washington outsider: a hard story to cover, and a hard man to predict re: governance. Best to go with the safer story of JFK II. More predictable, you see.

All hail Edwards. The choice of EVERYONE: Viacom, Disney, General ELectric AND FOx!!!
