February 22, 2004, The No. 14A Bus Route As Shown on the "Roadmap for Peace"

At least seven dead, many more injured, in a Hamas-claimed bombing attack on a bus in Jerusalem, The attack comes ahead of a hearing at the International Court of Justice in the Hague concerning Israel's construction of a security fence between itself and its Palestinian houseguests. Purportedly, Hamas officials meant to demonstrate that the fence will not protect Israeli civilians from this type of attack.

Ironically, such a fence would be most effective if it were built along the 1967 "Green Line" representing the border of the original State of Israel. The problem for Palestinians with the fence (other than those-- probably too large a number, really-- who oppose the fence simply because it will make killing Jews harder) is that its route constitutes a land grab, and the fence will run well over the Green Line incorporating Palestinian towns, villages, fields and other assorted property on the "Israeli side" of the fence. In so doing in the interest of throwing a bone to Israel's extremists and the settler movement, the Israelis will, of course, also be incorporating thousands-- if not tens of thousands or more-- of Palestinians on the Israeli side of the fence, undermining the "security" rationale of said fence. Also, I've never been sure how the fence separates the huge Palestinian population within municipal Jerusalem itself (which, of course, seems to be the leading target for bus bombings, though clearly not the only one).

Its obvious, then, that the fence is, unless it is re-routed to precisely the Green Line, much more of a land grab and much less of a security measure than the Sharon government would let on. Not that erecting it might not reduce suicide attacks inside Israel proper; I'm sure it would-- because it would cut off many Palestinians (though, of course, not cut off others). The fence ultimately can be taken down just as easily as it is put up. I have read estimates on the cost of the fence in the range of $200-300 million. This is probably around the cost of just one medium to large settlement (when you count roads, infrastructure and security), so... the "facts on the ground" the fence creates will be... likely temporary.

Weeks of "calm" have come to an end. I suspect that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict probably just is irreconcileable (certainly while Messrs. Sharon and Arafat are in charge of their respective sides, though other Israeli leaders have not been able to achieve a resolution). I think there's plenty of responsibility for this to go around. And Israeli and Palestinian civilians will continue to pay the price for positions held by extremists in each of their camps.

No matter how many times I post stories of this nature, nothing really seems to change on either side. Sad. Just so damned sad. And horrible.

Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
