This week's visit to Pravda gives us a nice follow-up of "anecdotal" evidence (which, as an attorney, I can tell you would be admissible in any court) that climate change be happening while we watch: a Russian version of Ice Station Zebra "North-pole station 32" seems to be sinking because large parts of the iceberg it sits on have melted.
Its not like those occupying the Arctic floating station will be donning thongs and rubbing on their bain de soleil: air temperature remains at around -35 degrees Celsius. However, the water under them (in this case, in the form of ice in the iceberg on which they built their station) is warming, slowly, but surely. Apparently, something similar happened to "North-pole station 31" around a decade ago.
At the other end of the world, I understand that similar stations on hard land in places like the South Georgia Islands require elaborate sun-blocking measures, because of the ozone hole. During my honeymoon near the Great Barrier Reef, we learned that Queensland, Australia leads the world in its rate of skin cancer--often blamed in part on the ozone hole.
One gets the sinking (pun... might be intended) feeling its much, much later than we think. The Earth, and even human life, will certainly "survive" whatever seems to happen. But given the almost certain connection between human activity and accelerating climate change, and the extraordinary human cost (yes, even economic cost) this will bring about... it becomes more and more obvious that only people who sincerely believe in Santa Claus will refuse to believe that human activity is altering global climate, and altering it for the worse.
