Would you not attend your own brother's wedding? You wouldn't if you were either President George W. Bush, or Governor John Ellis "JEB" Bush, and it was your brother Neil's wedding in Houston (to his second wife).

Senator Kerry-- take a free shot. In fact, take several free shots. How 'bout them family values: Neil himself is (1) a major figure in the savings & loan debacle of the late '80's and early '90's that helped send the country spiraling into a deep recession (but for which he might now be governor of Colorado!), (2) a close personal friend of John Hinckley's brother David who he was scheduled to have dinner with the night President Reagan was shot... by John Hinckley; (3) a recipient of largesse from a whole lot of places for his "business" advice (said largesse evidently including the services of a fair number of sex workers), and (4) a guy who had a REALLY bitter divorce recently (no, I mean BITTER).

BUT... he is the President's and the Governor's brother. Yes, being seen with him will (naturally) lead to all sorts of irritating associations (see above). BUT-- if you have any principles or values at all, and go around preaching about "family values" and sticking it up the asses of the rest of us, like it or not (especially when we DON'T like it), and then not showing up at your own brother's wedding shows the same kind of personal cowardice and lack of integrity that we have all come to expect from just about ANYONE named Bush, but especially from this President.

Its not like you are at Yalta or Pottsdam negotiating the end of a World War, now, is it, Mr. President? (Besides, I hear Houston has lots of great places you can exercise, sir. )

Your own brother, Mr. President? Is there no one you won't sell out in the interests of not losing a few polling points in key swing states? Boys and girls... I give you a character issue. The Bush Administration: it doesn't want us to know who it invites to the White House to formulate national energy policy, who outed a CIA agent, what the fuck happened on 9-11... or even who the President's own brother is. Character, America. This is the guy you voted for because Bill Clinton lied about a blow job.

charisse, a little pronoun confusion there. I was responding to TTD's comments that President Bush was the guy 'you' voted for because President Clinton received oral sex from Monica Lewinsky. While that may have been the deciding factor for some, it actually never came up for me when I was considering the candidates in 2000.

Hmmm... I think Andrew has a point: I was simply lumping the aggregate choice of nearly half the country's voters for Bush based on my interpretation of the "key macro" factor- the key Bush line being "I will restore honor and integrity to the White House", and the most devastating thing Gore ever said being "Bill Clinton is the greatest President we ever had". I saw the '00 as a character contest-- which happens when the issues, for whatever reason, aren't viewed as that important (say, during a period of... peace and prosperity?)

This year, of course, issues will be critical-- it will be a referendum on George W. Bush's performance (as it should be, for a sitting president).

Obviously, lost in my gross overgeneralization were the perfectly reasonable decisions of millions of rational people who (perhaps, like me?) felt Gore was going a little overboard in pandering to the Democratic base, and should have, in a Bush-like way, just kept it real simple and said-- you remember the depression his father brought on-- and you saw the happier days under our governance-- you pick which you like better. Gore didn't play it that way, now did he, instead opting for a lot of Shrumisms and proposing bold social programs that he kind of knew would be shot down in a GOP controlled Congress anyway...

Alas, Gore felt he had to distance himself from Clinton, and I think in doing so, ran much further left than he should (I know this may all be apostasy), but I can see why that would piss off a fair number of perfectly reasonable people. (Also, the phrase "I will fight for you" is as callow coming from Gore as it now is from Kerry).

So, since there was a perfectly rational basis to vote for George W. in '00 (actually, it was a rational basis to vote AGAINST Gore, but... same difference), I don't really see the casting of such votes as a neurosis-- particularly as the post-election Al Gore has taken even MORE wildly liberal positions (for which I personally love him, btw-- but again, I can see why that might piss a lot of people off who were kind of offended by Gore's doing so the first time).

Now, however, what we have should be a plain and simple referendum on Bush's performance in office. If one has a RATIONAL basis for believing that the President performed creditably in his first 3+ years in office, and otherwise likes the direction the country is going in, then by God, vote for him-- in fact, NOT doing so would be crazy!

If, however, one is simply a cheerleader for whom (my line) Bush could knife-rape a nun on live, national t.v. and such person would STILL support him without reservation, then, frankly, Julia has a point-- shit like that is just plain crazy.

Seriously, in my experience, voting for President has always been about choosing the least bad alternative. I started voting in 1988, and I've yet to see an election where I was particularly excited about any of the candidates. In 1988 I voted for Bush because I'd lived in Massachusetts and knew too much about Dukakis to trust him with the Oval Office. In 1992 I voted for Clinton because Bush seemed to be out of touch with what was happening in the country. In 1996 I voted for Dole because Clinton's first term had soured me on him. And in 2000 I voted for Bush because Gore just struck me as untrustworthy (a problem that Kerry must deal with as well). Now, however, I'm in a bind. I'm not overly fond of what President Bush has done since gaining office, but Kerry's past suggests to me that he would be a horrible commander in chief. On the other hand, with a Democrat in the White House and Republicans running Capitol Hill, we could be in for more of that great gridlock that was as responsible as anything government did in the 1990s for the boom (in my opinion, of course). This year strikes me as possibly the worst set of choices I've been presented with in my voting experience, and possibly the worst pairing since Nixon-McGovern in 1972.

Excellent, let me know how it works. I'll add methods for retrieving the rest of your collection too (not just the currently reading and favorite books) as well, so that might be a better option than creating xml feeds for each of these things.
