It looks like a preliminary report prepared for Israel's attorney general finds "insufficient evidence" to charge Israeli PM Ariel Sharon in an unfolding bribery scandal involving his son Gilad.
I'm sure that back at the White House, as Vice President Cheney is oiling up all of the President's joints, making sure the string is secure, and practicing the resonance of both his and the President's voice in the room that the Warren Commission... I mean, the 9-11 Commission, will be meeting them in... the President let out a big "yee haaa" that it looks like his man Sharon will get a pass, and hence, probably NOT be forced to resign (as he invariably would have been-- or may be if the Israeli AG Mozaz ends up indicting). Now, Bush can continue to relish the hard-ass Likud government that his Saudi masters want hiim to help prop up, to make sure that Israel is nice and aggressive so that its populace has someone to continue to hate (in lieu of the Royal Family).
Did you SERIOUSLY think that the Midland Machiavellians had any of this in them? When the President's strings aren't being pulled by Mr. Cheney, you can usually look up and see Prince Bandar al-Sultan somewhere near by.
Keeping Sharon in power is just another one of those win-win-win things for Bush. Some old Jews will foolishly think Bush is an actual friend of Israel for its own sake, and may (again) vote for him. That's a pure bonus. What matters is that fundamentalists view the continued existence of Israel as a necessary interim step toward the Apocalypse, which, let's face it, is what they are about. Not to scare the crap out of you, but that's probably close to 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 Americans who actually WANT to see the entire universe obliterated, so they can ascend to Heaven (and YOU CAN'T). It explains everything from environmental policy to education policy to to foreign policy fiscal policy-- pollute and spend and piss off allies and otherwise act as if there's no tomorrow, because ideally, it will be a self-fulfilling prophesy. Anyway-- Sharon is good for the base. AND he sticks it to the A-rabs too. And of course, an active, nasty Israel merrily stealing Palestinian land is, of course, a wonderful lightning rod in the Arab world, which makes the Saudis happy.
I mean, people in white shoes, white hoods AND white robes-- all happy for the same reason? It doesn't get any better than that.
