Fresh from yesterday's Supreme Court decision assuring us that some two-line Congressional resolution passed by Congress after September 11th supercedes the Bill of Rights, the President now seeks to demonstrate his dominion to all, by demonstrating that his commander-in-chief powers extend to the European Union as well, which he insists, should admit Turkey.

Of course, some sacrifices will have to be made to ensure Dear Leader's absolute hegemony over all he surveys: a few military people way down the line in the "inactive ready reserve", who, you know, thought they retired or were discharged from the service will have to think again. Johnny: tell them what they've won? An all-expense paid trip to beautiful Mesopotamia!

Some people, like Nadia McCaffrey, mother of the late Sgt. Patrick McCaffrey, apparently still need to be told just who is King of the World... Mrs. McCaffrey had the audacity to invite the media to the return of her son's flag draped coffin in Sacramento, California. Sorry, Mrs. McCaffrey-- your son's sacrifice is appreciated by a grateful nation. Now go away, and grieve in silence, and in private. The nation is still in mourning for Ronald Reagan-- his is the only flag-draped casket we are allowed to see.

So, all I have to say, is (via digby), "Let freedom reign",, which the King of the World wrote in a note passed to Incompetentaleeza Rice (I love that name) after being advised that the Iraqi sovereignty transfer fraud had been accomplished, in secret of course. That song in school you were forced to sing to the tune of God Save the Queen, you know, after being forced to pledge allegiance under God... yes, that one: the tagline is "Let Freedom Ring" (as in, you know, the Liberty Bell, and echoes for freedom-- a sound kind of thing). Well, the King of the World rightly corrected us. The word is "reign". As in power. (Not, say, as in "rein in", as you might mistakenly think the Supreme Court might have said; think again).

You see, as the Supreme Court told us yesterday, we are all not locked up in secret detention because of the benificence of the King of the World. In the interest of protecting us all, the King of the World can lock us up at "a time of his choosing", deny us counsel, charge or trial, and then move us around the country so that when the lawyer appointed to represent us by some misguided court files a habeas corpus petition, the Government will have an appropriate procedural defense to that annoying Bill of Rights. All hail the King of the World, to whom we owe our freedom and our safety, nay, our very lives.

You know what? Ben Franklin (who said "They who would trade their precious liberty for temporary security deserve neither") probably should get the hell off the hundred dollar bill to make way for St. Ronald Reagan. (If that's o.k. with the King of the World, of course).

Does "Padilla" give the government the ability to hold indefinitely as long as they move the alleged "enemy combatants" around to different jurisdictions? How many years do you think they can keep that going?

Sadly, I imagine they came up with that novel little loophole because of Ashcroft's "chicken little has a dirty bomb so run for your lives" pageant. Jayzuz.

To give credit where its probably due, I believe (but am not certain) that I stole the "Incompetentaleeza Rice" moniker from Tom Bogg of tbogg.

I think the government can play the Padilla game for around two years... like they did just now! But they only need to play it until mid-November, eh?

And no, I don't believe for one second that the Ashcroft dog and pony show-- which as we all know took place in Moscow because Ashcroft has no sense of irony swayed the Court, or anyone else. (Btw, some who have met Ashcroft personally believe he is not merely stupid, but quite probably a "special needs" case-- finding it inconceivable that this man could be a governor and a senator, let alone attorney general of our nation; but then, such a man WOULD have the ear of our President, a man evidently of comparable intellectual firepower.)
No-- this decision had nothing to do with "national safety"-- unless you mean the safety of the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign.
