The things you learn from foreign sources... this week's visit to the People's Daily reveals that not only has National Security Advisor Incompetentaleeza Rice visited Beijing, and premier Hu Jin-Tao and strong-man Jiang Ze-Minh, but she has reiterated the United States' commitment to the "One-China Policy" and the "Three Communiques"... which means the allegedly mightiest nation in the world will continue to kowtow to the world's largest authoritarian regime as it kicks around the nascent democracy off its coast... In the great scheme of things, it would be nice if Taiwan's freedom and independence were recognized--but as long as its people actually ARE free and independent-- who really cares. If the price of Beijing staying off their backs is the pretense of being a "renegade province"-- WHAT THE FUCK, RIGHT? There are lots of things not worth a world war about, I would say... I didn't used to feel this way, but you'll see why practicality dictates certain things below...
(BTW, this President Bush stepped in it early on, when he called China a "strategic competitor", which, of course, it is, and then proceeded to grossly mishandle the downed surveillance plane incident.)
Not that I even disagree with the policy, once you understand the reason why we're doing it: Beijing is bankrolling our deficits-- both our trade deficit and our national budget deficit. If you're wondering where the heavy interest bill on the national debt gets collected, aside from a few rich people really enjoying their new tax breaks, a humongous part of it goes to the Central Bank of China. In short, its not just cheap labor-- its our own profligacy and insistence on borrowing, both as individuals and as a nation-- that makes us progressively more dependent on China to pay for our ongoing national profligacy (see, deficits do matter-- Reagan proved it).
Oh, and there's that North Korea thing, which wasn't mentioned... but is kind of important. Its been a long time since China called the shots in North Korea, but China is pretty much the only country with which North Korea has any kind of regular contact, and China is... more or less, bankrolling it too. We kind of need China's help to intercede for us with that lunatic, the foul-mouthed whoremonger and cognac freak, Dear Leader Kim Jong Il (it has been pointed out on occasion that while Kim is probably a mad man, he is surrounded by rational apparatchiks and generals who probably do not want to be incinerated, or rounded up and hanged... there is business that can be done with North Korea...and at this point, we need China's help, big time-- no two ways about it.)
Think about it: we're about to pull out a third of our troops in South Korea, probably to shore up Iraq... our leverage in the North Korea department is ever declining... while we shot our wad on the Axis of Evil TM member that DID NOT have the capability of proliferating nucular weapons!
Anyway-- Condi is in Beijing (or was)... having seen no mention of it in our stateside sources... interesting and interestinger...

China being the largest consumer base and likely to remain so for decades to come, of course Bush caters to the biggest buyers. Hell, he can dump allies right and left if they're not buying lots of US stuff, so long as he can sell to China.
That's why the Chamber of Commerce likes him so. Commerce is the only loyalty, not democracy.
