the talking dog

July 11, 2004, Welcome to My Nightmare (Part Deux of an open-ended series)

I saw that based on Scotty McLellan's non-answer answer of a simple question: the elections in November will go forward by hell or high water-- the White House will guarnatee that... Scotty refused to guarantee anything, which prompted Zizka to offer a series of posts, including futures betting on the possibility of the elections cancelled. Frankly, I was kind of hoping this would just go away-- a trial balloon sinking like a stone.

But no... Tom Ridge announced plans to submit a bill to Congress allowing the federal government to postpone elections in the event of a terrorist attack.

And yes-- postpone means as in "not have". No two ways about it.

This is the ballgame (again): tell your Congressional Rep you will hold them personally responsible if they do not do everything in their power to stop such totalitarian nonsense from becoming law.

I first thought my head was spinning after this morning's Bronx Half-Marathon in a hot and largely shadeless North Bronx (for Jim Henley , I tell you that my time was just under an 11 minute mile, around 2:23:20-- Jim and I are training for the Marine Corps Marathon on Halloween-- and Jim's training is going well... better than mine)... but I digress.

My eyes did not deceive me, and this is not a joke. We'd best stop this-- now. We are a democracy-- we will not be dictated to by terrorists. Or those looking to take advantage of terrorists with a political land-grab.

Yes and yes again. I was apalled when I read this. Apparently the Spanish can sustain a major terrorist attack and hold national elections, but the US, which is supposed to be standing up to terrorism, has to run around in circles if anything happens. And it is all a subterfuge because the Bush regime knows it is going down and is getting desperate.

And good luck in the marathon.

Posted by WallyCoxLives at July 12, 2004 08:44 AM

File this under "Not only are you not going to vote, you can't even demonstrate."

Today's papers in New York City headline that "anarchists" are threatening to disrupt the Republican Convention. As a result, even more police manpower than previously stated will be assembled to prevent any disruption, or in actuality, expression of 1st Amendment rights. Also, steel roadblocks will be installed around the Madison Square Garden area. I have always believed the initial manpower estimates to be low anyway. Now they have some "justification" for increase. I also believe that the City will be shut down, and I am making plans to be elsewhere.

First of all, the term "anarchists" hasn't been used since the Red Scare, and before that, the days of labor organizing. Who throws out this term? From the reports of whom these "anarchists" might be based on past demonstrations are world leader meetings, they may be radical in beliefs (if you call insistence that workers receive a living wage radical), but none of these "anarchists" are calling for an end to government. We are truly in troubled times when any one with opposition risks being labelled an "anarchist."

So, TD, since you may plan on demonstrating at the convention, you are now an official anarchist. I fear that you may be dealt with accordingly.

Look for that terrorist attack to take place in a swing state that's going toward Kerry. It won't be too massive in scale, but just enough to get the job done. Hopefully, no one gets hurt.

Posted by Hassan Bar Sinister at July 12, 2004 01:26 PM

Right on the money, Hassan. Will the cowards of Congress give the Republican Crime Syndicate the power it needs to suspend the elections? Will it matter? My guess is that even if the power is not granted, they will suspend elections this fall anyway, and that regardless of whether or not there is a terror attack.

Posted by WallyCoxLives at July 12, 2004 03:02 PM

Not sure on the "regardless of whether or not there is a terror attack". I think you should properly add "terror attack in the United States". Its an almost statistical certainty that something somewhere in the world will blow up around the election-- some tie-in to American interests will be cited, etc., etc.

I'm still going to be optimistic and hope they are trial ballooning this thing-- and somebody will step up to the plate to point out that the best plan is to show the terrorists our resolve to proceed regardless of what they do.

As to New York's cancellation of its election on 9-11, that was a PRIMARY election-- the regular election was held in November (Rudy "I want to be mayor forever" Giuliani notwithstanding).

Further, as far as NYC went-- after the 9-11 attack, the SUBWAYS WERE SHUT DOWN, as were bridges and tunnels... of course, NYC is a LOCAL jurisdiction, and no one questioned the particular delaying measures...

This comes down to a mysterious unelected election commission-- appointed by Bush himself after the Florida 2000 debacle-- asking for the authority to end our democracy by fiat, based on its discretion.

While the Supreme Court (5-4) will have no problem with that, we may have finally hit the point where the American people won't stand for this shit anymore... PLEASE?

Posted by the talking dog at July 12, 2004 03:13 PM

I thought the Daily News headline was so funny, I almost bought the paper just to cut it out and save it. Anarchists? Cops worried about threats of "chaos"? Chaos in New York? (What a concept.) I was wondering when they were going to call in Spiderman for assistance.

As for the postponement of elections, what do you bet that the proposed legislation will include the right to postpone the election if a terrorist attack is "imminent," and postponement is necessary to preserve the security of the homeland? They've shown such superb judgement in the past about evaluating imminent threats . . . .

Posted by mamayo at July 12, 2004 03:43 PM

I hope the American people won't stand for it. I already wrote to my Congress people about it, but they are all Democratic and probably wouldn't give any ground to this proposal as it is. But I am less optimistic than you are TG. I think the scum in power would suspend the elections regardless of whether there is a terror attack anywhere in the world. They might bother themselves to announce that the "chatter" was at such a level that they couldn't risk holding an election "for our own safety" or some such nonsense.

Posted by WallyCoxLives at July 12, 2004 03:43 PM

Exactly so, WallyC. I have already written my Senators and Rep, as well.

Posted by mamayo at July 12, 2004 03:46 PM

No one ever writes me.

Posted by Hassan Bar Sinister at July 12, 2004 04:43 PM

Cheer up Hassan. By this time next year, I'm sure Dear Leader will have commissioned a full length opera about you from the People's National Theater (in Arabic! though, sadly, it won't be allowed to be shown back in the homeland... live music and all...)

Well, we're just about running out of time on our American way of life. It took NOTHING-- I mean NOTHING-- to end it. For Christ's sake, people, I was in downtown New York on 9-11--- its o.k., I can live with it. I fail to see how asswipes in Texas and the Carolinas and other Red States can get so worked up about something that THE ACTUAL INTENDED TARGETS are now putting in perspective...

Yup: hit the Congresspeople, people with the message... Great job-- and keep up the rhetorical assaults!

Dear Hassan Bar Sinister,

It was lovely seeing you at the cotillion. We must do that again some time.

Your friend,

WallyCoxLives

Posted by WallyCoxLives at July 13, 2004 08:42 AM

I have no friends. I am evil.
Besides, what is a cotillion?

Posted by Hassan Bar Sinister at July 13, 2004 12:37 PM

You said no one ever writes to you, so I wrote to you. Does it matter what a cotillion is?

And you're not so bad.

Posted by WallyCoxLives at July 13, 2004 01:00 PM

Come one, Hassan-- you and Thurston Howell and Poppy Bush and Ken Lay used to hang out at cotillions all the time... a cotillion is a dance for debutantes and the like... in full dress-- everyone would wear their tuxedos and couture evening dresses, and you would show up in that Lawrence of Arabia get-up that you take out for official occasions and photo-ops... Or did that stuff you helped Poppy Bush import finally take out your memory, once and for all?

Posted by the talking dog at July 13, 2004 01:35 PM

Listen, I'm evil, very very evil.
Okay.

As to you, TD. I know these people. They are bad too. But not as evil as me. Ken Lay did get caught, I won't.
No one outside of this site has heard of me. That's the difference.

Posted by Hassan Bar Sinister at July 13, 2004 01:42 PM

Oh, stop it. We all know you're a sweet, cuddly old teddy bear. You just like to pretend to be evil.

Well, okay, fine. I don't want to make you upset or you won't be able to drink your Postum tonight.

Yes, Hassan honey, you're very very evil. You're just the evilest little snookums in the world.

Nice site Ever wonder how cigarettes are made? These are then cut to proper length for cigarettes. Filter-tipped brands have a double-length filter inserted between every two cigarettes; filters are sealed to the rods and then cut in half to produce two cigarettes, each one having a filter on one end.
