July 13, 2004, This Just In: Dog Bites Man
In a surprise to exactly no one, the General Accounting Office (Congress's investigative arm, and, for a short time, your talking dog's employer) issued a report critical of the vague and useless "terror warnings" issued by Commissar Ridge of the Homeland Security Commissariat.
A survey of law enforcement officials around the country revealed that they are given the same vague and useless information as the public. The survey concluded that most law enforcement agencies agree that the Bush Administration's playing of the "actual threat information which would enable you to meaningfully respond is, of course, classified" game, undermines the utility of the warning system. Most of the public and law enforcement agencies believe it is simply a game by the Bush Administration to keep people on edge and politicize the terror issue. Hence, the report asserts, the Bush Adminsitration should either make clear to law enforcement agencies exactly what it is they have that causes them concern, or else shut the fuck up.

"NYPD to pay for Informers"
I've just learned from a reliable source that the NYPD is planning on offering cash payments to informers about the convention demonstrators.
This is on top of the fake demonstrators that will be "embedded" in order to generate some reason for the total demonstation shutdown that will occur on the day that Bush is to address the convention.
Informants, checkpoints, and no assembly without state approval?
Is this New York or 1960's East Germany?

No, my friend-- the time is now. The place-- that is whats' different: the West Side is now the West Bank.
The irony is that this will be covered by a free press-- not ours (LOL)-- Al Jazeera---- who will beam it all over the Arab world, establishing, essentially, that a few Islamist nuts managed to get the United States to destroy itself-- as Lady Liberty weeps out in the harbor that will probably be full of nuclear submarines (if not mines).

TD,
Apparently you support security in Baghdad, but not in New York. Interesting. I presume that there will be no security in Boston. The Democrats will be safer there than the Yankees visiting in the playoffs. Democracy and security are not mutually exclusive, as you keep touting about Iraq. Perhaps if the Democrats took security more seriously, the admirable wing of the Kennedy family would still be alive.
Mr. Nudge (Can I call you Fatt?)
Informers? East Germany? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. By the way, where are you lining up to protest?

Welcome back, Mr. C... Were you, like, in a Red State or something?
Hey, I like security and the police just fine-- except when their presence is not to protect me from criminals, but to treat me AS one of the criminals... I will say it over and over again: while OBL represents a real, albeit very attenuated, threat to my life, George W. Bush presents a much more serious and immediate threat to my liberty.
If the police are here to provide ME (and the rest of the CITIZENRY) and provide security-- to protect THE CITY, as well as its muckity-muck visitors, hey, that's just fine, and only a lunatic wouldn't welcome it.
I repeat: if they are here to protect self-appointed mandarins from having to be troubled with actually seeing the displeasure of those they purportedly govern, then I have no particular use for the police, and I'd rather see them recalled to barracks AND TAKE MY CHANCES with "the terrorists".
See a recent post re: Trotsky's statements as to anarchy and the police.

You guys make some good points, but all I care about is getting some business in this joint. Police and demonstrators, they both gotta eat.
