25th Anniversary Waltz

Not quite sure what we get… the official wedding list suggests that this is the silver anniversary, of this here blog that theoretically went live on September 4, 2001 (a week before you know what), although its first post was on September 18, 2001 (a week after you know what). So we’ll have more commemorations… maybe…

Here in New York, at least, providence did us something of a solid, insofar as we are advised that the President will not be gracing us with his presence on this year’s September 11th commemoration (because he can’t just stand there and not give one of his Nuremberg rally speeches… HE CAN’T!)

I confess that aside from the gestalt of 9-11 (basically, the beginning of the end of the post-World War II “rules based international order,” as the United States could merrily engage in preemptive war, torture, total surveillance of everyone on Earth especially inside the USA, etc., etc. all in the name of fighting TERRRORRRRISM…), the commemorations have always made me uncomfortable. I wonder if others are torn between the dissonance of the insistence on using a public space and occasion for what is fundamentally the expression of private grief (i.e. the reading of the names of those killed by their family members), notwithstanding the far broader implications to the American way of life, and indeed, to life on the entire planet (the one that the United States decided to launch a “global war on terror” against).

For many years, the mainstay of this blog was the interviews with players associated with the little American hospitality suites maintained on our occupied corner of Cuba at Guantanamo Bay. I realize I haven’t published one of those since… 2014? IDK… both of my friend Candace Gorman’s clients have since been returned to their respective home countries (Libya and Algeria) after lone stints at GTMO… and yet, even at over 24 years on, 15 men are still held by the United States at GTMO… admittedly, most have been “charged” with something (though only two IIRC have been “convicted” of anything).

In the meantime, everyone here at Stately Dog Manor has, of course, gotten 25 years older… we lost TD Dad about 11 years ago… [in bloggy news, we lost our founding-co-blogger Lyle last year]. The Loquacious Pup is 26 now and made it through an awful illness two years ago. TD Mom is still going strong, as are TD in-laws (TD Father in law turns 98 in a couple of days)… Mrs. TD and I will be married 35 years by the end of the month… I hope that before the end of the year I will manage to finally complete a 100-mile run and my 100th marathon… because this is America, notwithstanding that we are both in our sixties, Mrs. TD and I continue working (because who wants to be unemployed in orange man’s America?).

You know who continues merrily destroying the fabric of our republic, and I will say out loud that I am somewhat “concerned” about the confluence of September 11th and a Jewish high holiday and the need of a certain orange man for any excuse necessary to formally suspend the constitution and go to martial law and cancel elections so that he can spend the rest of his life living in his illegal ballroom where the White House used to be.

We’ll leave it there for now. I expect there will be more posts this month, especially next week for the 25th anniversary of you-know-what.
